DELTARUNE is officially described as a parallel story to UNDERTALE, set in a different world where characters have lived different lives. Creator Toby Fox also says the worlds can still have connections, but the official explanation does not establish a sequel, prequel, or shared timeline.
What Toby Fox says about the connection
The clearest answer comes from the official DELTARUNE FAQ: “Essentially, this is not the world of UNDERTALE,” and its characters have “lived different lives.” The FAQ adds: “That doesn’t mean there will be no connections at all though.”

The official game page calls DELTARUNE “the parallel story to UNDERTALE.” Taken together, these statements support a separate-world, parallel-story description, with room for connections whose exact nature has not been specified.
Is DELTARUNE a sequel or prequel?
Neither is established by the official sources. Fox’s different-world explanation does not place DELTARUNE before or after UNDERTALE, and the official descriptions do not identify it as a continuation of UNDERTALE’s timeline. Calling it a confirmed sequel, prequel, or alternate timeline goes beyond what those sources say.

The FAQ also reassures players that UNDERTALE’s world and ending remain as they left them. That is consistent with a separate story, not evidence that one game’s events overwrite the other’s.
Are the characters the same in both games?
Familiar names and faces appear in DELTARUNE: the official page specifically names Toriel and Sans. But Fox’s FAQ says the characters have lived different lives in a different world. A character’s appearance or name, on its own, does not establish the same biography or identity across both games.
Players can interpret parallels or details in the games as clues, but a proposed shared identity, reincarnation, or particular timeline remains interpretation rather than an explanation confirmed by the official sources.
Do you need to play UNDERTALE first?
The official FAQ frames DELTARUNE as something players may play after completing UNDERTALE; it does not establish UNDERTALE as a prerequisite. Playing UNDERTALE first can give you context for familiar names and faces, but it does not resolve the relationship into a confirmed chronology.

As of October 8, 2026, the official DELTARUNE site lists Chapters 1–5 as available and says more chapters are planned as free updates. The FAQ says Chapter 6 is in development; the Steam listing gives 2027 as the team’s target, not a guaranteed release date.
This status is separate from the canon question: chapter releases do not establish a timeline connection between the games. The FAQ describes DELTARUNE as having one ending, while the official page presents it as a chapter-based game with bullet-dodging combat, hidden bosses, and new and familiar characters.
