Sodium’s Use Fog Occlusion setting is not a fog-off switch: it skips rendering chunks already hidden by fog to improve performance.
What Sodium’s fog setting actually does
In Sodium’s video options, Use Fog Occlusion controls a rendering optimization. Its tooltip says: “If enabled, chunks which are determined to be fully hidden by fog effects will not be rendered, helping to improve performance.” It does not remove the fog effect. Remove distance fog with No Fog Perfected
No Fog Perfected documents integration with Sodium: when Sodium is installed, the mod’s controls appear in Video Settings under a No Fog Perfected category. It disables Overworld, Nether, and End distance fog by default.
- Check your Minecraft version and loader. Confirm the instance’s exact game version and whether it uses Fabric or NeoForge.
- Choose a matching mod build. The project lists Fabric and NeoForge builds and supported Minecraft versions. Check its current file list and download a build matching both your game version and loader.
- Open the settings. Launch the game and go to Video Settings, then open No Fog Perfected to configure its fog options.
- Check other fog types separately. Distance-fog removal does not necessarily remove fog from water, lava, powder snow, or effects such as blindness and darkness.
If Sodium is not installed, No Fog Perfected documents the chat command /nofog <type> toggle for toggling an individual fog type.

Alternative: Disable Fog
Disable Fog is another client-side option. Its documented switches cover terrain, atmospheric, lava, water, powder-snow, blindness, and darkness fog, and it supports per-dimension overrides.
Its configuration access depends on the loader: Fabric and Quilt users need ModMenu for the in-game configuration screen; Forge and NeoForge users can use the mod list’s Config button. Check the project page’s file list for a build matching your Minecraft version and loader.

The project documentation does not establish that either mod is faster or provides better visual quality; choose based on the fog controls and configuration options you need.

- Confirm the mod loaded. Make sure you installed a build for the instance’s exact Minecraft version and loader, not just a nearby version.
- Look for a separate fog category. Water, lava, powder snow, blindness, and darkness can use controls separate from distance fog.
- Use the mod’s own configuration. Sodium’s fog-occlusion option only affects rendering of fog-hidden chunks; changing it will not disable the fog itself.
- Avoid editing Sodium mixin settings for this purpose. Sodium describes those overrides as advanced configuration and warns that patches can depend on one another or be necessary for the mod to work. See Sodium’s configuration wiki.
A Sodium issue tracker request asking to turn off fog dates to August 16, 2020; its accepted status is historical context, not evidence of a current built-in fog-removal control. See the issue.
