Heavenly Chips are the currency you earn by ascending in Cookie Clicker. Ascending resets your current run in exchange for Heavenly Chips and prestige: chips buy persistent Heavenly Upgrades, while prestige increases cookie production in later runs. The community-maintained Cookie Clicker Wiki describes the relationship as one Heavenly Chip per prestige level gained and a +1% CpS bonus per prestige level.
How do you get Heavenly Chips?
- Bake cookies in a run. The ascension reward is based on the cookies baked over your accumulated game history, not simply on the cookies currently held.
- Ascend. Ascension resets the current run and awards prestige and Heavenly Chips. The wiki describes the chip reward as the difference between your previous prestige and the prestige level implied by your all-time cookies baked.
- Spend chips on Heavenly Upgrades. These upgrades grant various benefits. The first Legacy upgrade unlocks the Heavenly Chips system, and purchased heavenly upgrades persist through later ascensions, according to the wiki’s Ascension page.
- Start the next run with prestige. Prestige gives a lasting production advantage, so you rebuild faster after the reset.
What is the difference between Heavenly Chips and prestige?
They are linked rewards, but they do different jobs. Heavenly Chips are spendable currency for Heavenly Upgrades. Prestige is a lasting progression bonus: the wiki reports that each prestige level adds +1% to cookies per second (CpS). It also describes the gain as one prestige level for each Heavenly Chip earned.
In practical terms, an ascension turns accumulated cookie production into both a budget for permanent upgrades and a production boost for future runs. Chips are not earned by ordinary clicking or by purchasing a building during the run; they come from ascending.
When should you ascend?
There is no single threshold established as best for every player. Ascending means giving up current-run progress for persistent advancement, so consider whether the prestige and chip reward—and the Heavenly Upgrades you can afford—are worth restarting for your play style. The community wiki offers suggested early milestones and upgrade priorities, but those are recommendations rather than a developer-mandated rule.
