Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You can’t reset a legacy Nintendo Network ID (NNID) password without access to the email address linked to it. Nintendo’s documented next step is to contact Nintendo Support and ask to update that address; Nintendo says the update must happen before you can use Forgot Password. This applies to NNIDs for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS family systems—not to a current Nintendo Account.
First, make sure you’re recovering an NNID
Nintendo Network IDs were used with Wii U and Nintendo 3DS family systems. They are separate from current Nintendo Accounts, and Nintendo has discontinued using an NNID to sign in to or create a Nintendo Account. Nintendo’s NNID information and current sign-in guidance explain the distinction.
If you are trying to sign in to a current Nintendo Account, use that account’s email address or Sign-in ID and password, or an eligible linked Google or Apple account. For trouble accessing its associated email, follow Nintendo’s separate Nintendo Account sign-in guidance. Those steps do not reset an NNID password.
If you can’t access the NNID email address
- Contact Nintendo Support for your region. Ask to update the email address associated with your NNID. Nintendo of America says it must update the email before you can use Forgot Password. Its guidance does not specify which ownership checks or documents may be requested, how long a review takes, or guarantee recovery in every case. Use your regional Nintendo support site if you are outside the United States.
- After the email is updated, use the NNID Forgot Password flow. Nintendo sends a temporary password to the address currently associated with the NNID. It expires after 24 hours, according to Nintendo of America Support.
- Sign in on your Wii U or Nintendo 3DS family system and change the password in the console settings. Use the temporary password promptly, before it expires.
Nintendo’s documented guidance does not provide a self-service method to bypass the old inbox. Avoid treating current Nintendo Account recovery as a substitute for updating an NNID’s email.

If you have the email but forgot the NNID or password
Forgot the NNID
Nintendo’s NNID lookup asks for the associated email address and either the account birth date or nickname, then sends the NNID to that email. It cannot help if you cannot open the inbox. See Nintendo’s NNID lookup instructions.
Forgot the password
Use Nintendo’s NNID Forgot Password instructions. The temporary password goes to the email already linked to the NNID and is valid for 24 hours. If that inbox is inaccessible, contact support to update the address first.

If your NNID is linked to a Nintendo Account
If your concern is account security rather than a forgotten NNID password, Nintendo’s account recovery guidance recommends changing the NNID password on a Wii U or Nintendo 3DS family system. If you cannot change it, Nintendo advises unlinking the NNID from the Nintendo Account. This security advice does not replace contacting support when you cannot access the NNID’s associated email.
