To permanently remove a mod, remove it from the system that installed it—and remove any separate subscription, downloaded archive, or local copy you also want gone. If a Workshop mod returns after you delete its files, unsubscribe from it first. In Vortex, Remove, Delete Archive, and Purge Mods do different jobs; none should be treated as interchangeable.
What “permanently delete” can mean
A mod may have several separate copies or records: a Workshop subscription, a copy managed by a mod manager, files deployed into the game folder, a downloaded archive, and game-specific settings or save data. Removing one does not necessarily remove the others. Decide whether you want to stop the mod from loading, reclaim disk space, or both.
- Stop it from loading: remove the subscription or listing where applicable, then remove or disable the installed copy through its manager.
- Free disk space: also remove the manager’s downloaded archive and any other copy you no longer need.
- Preserve saves and settings: do not delete them blindly. There is no universal rule for where games store mod settings or whether a mod has changed save data.
Identify how the mod was installed
Check the game’s mod list and the manager you used. The same mod may exist both as a Workshop item and as a separate local copy, so do not assume that removing one entry removes every copy. The exact cleanup steps depend on the game, operating system, mod, and installation method.
Remove Workshop mods so they do not return
For a Workshop mod, remove its subscription using the Workshop controls for that game. A Project Zomboid Steam Community discussion posted December 20, 2024, describes subscribed content being downloaded again after local files were deleted: Steam Community: “Deleting Mods”. That is community guidance about a specific game, not a universal Steam click-by-click procedure; check the current controls for your game.

After unsubscribing, check the game’s own mod list for another local copy. If you only delete files while a subscription remains active, that may not stop the content from returning.
Remove a mod in Vortex
Vortex separates the managed mod, its downloaded archive, and files deployed into the game folder. The Nexus Mods Vortex guide describes the distinct effects of its removal options:

- In Vortex, select the mod and choose Remove, then select Remove Mod to remove the managed mod.
- If you also want to erase the downloaded ZIP or 7z package, choose Delete Archive. Keeping the archive can allow you to reinstall without downloading it again.
- Use Purge Mods only when you want to remove deployed mod files or links from the game folder. Purge leaves managed mods in the staging area, so they can be deployed again.
In short, Remove is for the managed mod, Delete Archive is for its downloaded package, and Purge Mods clears deployed files from the game folder without deleting the managed mod. The guide’s specific description refers to Skyrim; follow the options shown by your installed Vortex version and game.
Remove a mod in Mod Organizer 2
Use Mod Organizer 2’s mod-management controls to uninstall the mod, and inspect its downloads separately if you also want to reclaim the archive’s space. The Mod Organizer 2 listing describes installation and uninstallation as core functions, but does not document current button-by-button steps. Uninstalling MO2 itself is not the same as removing its content: the listing says the standard Windows uninstaller will likely leave profiles, mods, and downloads behind.

Remove manually installed files safely
If you copied mod files into a game folder yourself, follow instructions for that exact game and mod. Remove only files you can identify as belonging to the mod. There is no safe universal folder path: a Steam Community post gives a Source-game addons folder as one example, while comments for Hearthpyre discuss a local Mods-folder copy in that game’s case. Those examples are game-specific, not general instructions:

If you cannot tell which files belong to the mod, look for the game’s or mod’s own uninstall directions rather than deleting a folder based on its name.

Verify removal and troubleshoot a returning mod
- Reopen the game’s mod list or restart the game, then check whether the mod is still listed or active.
- If it returns, check whether its Workshop subscription is still active.
- If the subscription is gone, check for a second local copy or files still deployed by a mod manager.
- If the game still has problems, do not assume the mod is still installed. The Project Zomboid community discussion also suggests verifying game files, but that is not a universal fix for every game or mod issue.

Do not confuse mod cleanup with removing Steam
Uninstalling Steam is far broader than deleting one mod. Steam’s uninstall instructions say that Steam and installed game content are removed, and advise moving steamapps if you want to preserve game installs. Use the game’s or mod manager’s removal controls for a single mod instead.
What happens to saves and settings?
Removing a mod does not establish that changes it already made to a save file will be undone. Nor do games store mod settings in one universal location. Consult the game’s and mod’s documentation before deleting saves or configuration data; remove only data you can confidently identify.
