How Do Video Games Affect Academic Performance?

Research does not show that video games universally help or hurt grades. The answer depends on the kind of gaming studied, the outcome measured, and whether the evidence can establish cause and effect.

Video games do not have one established effect on academic performance. Studies often link problematic gaming with lower grades or academic scores, but they do not show that gaming itself caused the difference. Meanwhile, some structured game-based interventions improve particular cognitive-test scores; that is not the same as proving that recreational play raises grades.

What “video game use” means changes the answer

Studies examine different activities under the broad label of gaming: ordinary recreational play, gaming identified as problematic by a screening measure, structured cognitive training, exercise-based games, and games deliberately used for classroom learning. These are not interchangeable exposures. A study that measures hours played cannot automatically tell whether it has captured harmful patterns, purposeful practice, or simply a hobby.

Outcomes also differ. Grades and GPA measure academic achievement; tests of working memory, inhibition, or cognitive flexibility measure specific cognitive skills. A gain on a cognitive test should not be described as a grade improvement unless the study measured grades and demonstrated that outcome.

What studies find about problematic gaming and school performance

A 2024 review by Alzahrani and Griffiths included 27 empirical studies that assessed problematic gaming with a screening instrument and academic performance using objective grades or GPA. Twenty-four studies reported a negative relationship. That count describes how many studies reported an association; it is not a pooled estimate of how much gaming lowers grades, nor proof that gaming caused poorer performance. Most studies in the review were cross-sectional: they measured gaming and academic performance at roughly the same time. Such a design cannot establish which came first. The review notes that some more recent studies found no significant predictive effect of problematic gaming, while others suggested that poor academic performance may predict later problematic gaming. The relationship could run in either direction, vary between students, or reflect other factors.

A separate 2019 systematic review and meta-analysis reported an inverse association between video-game playing and adolescents’ composite scores (effect size −0.16; 95% confidence interval −0.24 to −0.09). This is a modest association across the studies reviewed, not an estimate of the effect of assigning students to play games. It does not show that games caused lower scores. Do games improve cognition or grades?

Structured cognitive training

A 2023 meta-analysis by Smith and Basak covered 63 studies, 118 investigations, and 2,079 participants. It reported an overall cognitive-training effect of g = 0.25 (p < .001). Transfer varied by the cognitive skill measured and by specific gameplay features; broad genre labels were less informative than those features. The result concerns cognitive outcomes, not evidence that ordinary play improves school grades. Smith and Basak’s meta-analysis

Exergaming

A 2023 meta-analysis of randomized exergaming trials among children aged 4–12 reported improvements on measures of cognitive flexibility (SMD 0.34; 95% CI 0.17–0.52), inhibitory control (SMD 0.57; 95% CI 0.31–0.83), and working memory (SMD 0.26; 95% CI 0.02–0.51). The review also noted publication bias and called for more rigorous studies. These are executive-function measures, not demonstrated increases in grades. Chen et al.’s exergaming review

Games designed for learning

Classroom use is a separate question from recreational gaming. A 2024 systematic review describes studies using titles including Minecraft, The Sims 4, and Logical Journey of the Zoombinis to investigate particular learning, language, problem-solving, or metacognitive goals. Findings from a specific classroom activity do not establish that recreational gaming—or buying a game in general—improves academic performance. 2024 systematic review of metacognition and games

How to interpret the evidence

Evidence type What it can tell you What it cannot establish on its own
Cross-sectional association Whether gaming and academic outcomes are related in the measured group. Whether gaming caused a change, or whether the relationship runs in the other direction.
Longitudinal observation Whether one measure predicts a later outcome, depending on study design and analysis. Cause and effect with certainty; other explanations may remain.
Randomized intervention Whether a defined intervention affected the outcomes measured in that trial. That ordinary gaming has the same effect, or that a cognitive-test change transfers to grades.

These distinctions matter when comparing studies. Consider what kind of play was measured, how the researchers defined problematic gaming, the students’ ages, the outcome assessed, and whether the design could support a causal conclusion. A result for one game feature, activity, age group, or test should not be generalized to every player or genre.

Is there a number of gaming hours that lowers grades?

The studies summarized here do not establish a universal number of hours at which gaming harms academic performance. Hours alone also do not distinguish recreational play from problematic patterns. A student’s grades cannot be predicted from playtime alone on the basis of this evidence.

For a family concerned about schoolwork, it is more useful to look at the individual pattern: whether gaming is displacing study or sleep, whether assignments are being completed, and whether the student feels unable to control play. These are practical areas to assess, not effects or thresholds established by the studies summarized above.
