Online gaming can give people a place to communicate, cooperate, build friendships and feel part of a community. It can also leave some players with weaker offline connections or social experiences that do not feel supportive. The effects depend on the people, the game and the quality of the community—not simply on whether play happens online.
Where social interaction happens in online games
Social play is more than voice chat. Players interact while pursuing shared goals, coordinating strategies, helping one another learn and responding to what happens in a match. They may also form groups, develop a sense of belonging, or talk about and revisit shared experiences after a session ends.
A 2023 systematic review by David Gonçalves and colleagues examined 263 publications on social experiences involving more than one player or spectator. The review describes social gaming as a mix of in-game communication, relationships and group identity, and interaction around play. Its 263 publications were gathered in February 2021; that figure describes the review’s scope, not the number of players worldwide. Read the review.
How online communities can support friendships
Being part of an online gaming community can create opportunities to meet people and maintain relationships. In a 2023 systematic review, Tushya, Dinesh Chhabra and Betina Abraham included 24 articles covering 15,451 players. They found predominantly positive associations between community membership and friendship, social skills and social capital.

- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.

Those outcomes varied with the community and the way people played together. The review identified community size, the amount and purpose of interaction, collective play, cooperation and learning shared goals as relevant factors. A group that regularly coordinates and helps its members can offer different social opportunities from a setting where players rarely interact beyond a match. The review also noted that some players gained online social capital at the expense of offline social capital. Read the review.
How online connections relate to in-person relationships
Online ties can offer companionship and support, but they do not automatically replace in-person relationships. The two kinds of networks can serve different purposes: a player might have a few close online confidants, a broad circle of gaming acquaintances, supportive in-person relationships, or some combination.

A 2024 cross-sectional study in the Journal of Public Mental Health surveyed 301 adult online gamers recruited from gaming platforms and communities. It compared online and in-person networks, including their breadth and the closeness of relationships. In this sample, closer online ties and confiding in online contacts were associated with less perceived isolation and greater perceived support, but not with anxiety or depressive symptoms. In-person network characteristics showed stronger associations with the mental-health outcomes measured. Because the study was cross-sectional, it cannot show that gaming or a particular network pattern caused these outcomes. Read the study.
The researchers distinguish bonding social capital—close ties involving trust and support—from bridging social capital—broader ties across different groups. Both can matter, but a large list of gaming contacts is not the same thing as having someone to confide in.

When online gaming can involve social trade-offs
Not every community is welcoming or every interaction supportive. The research points to variation in how people participate and what they get from a community; it does not establish that a particular genre, device or amount of play guarantees better or worse relationships.
A 2023 systematic review examined 36 studies focused specifically on escapist motivation in virtual gaming. It reported associations between escapist motivation and negative mental, emotional and social outcomes in some studies, including maladaptive real-world social life. It also found potential benefits in some contexts, such as belonging in virtual communities and reduced loneliness for anxious people. These findings concern escapist motivation, not everyone who plays online games, and relied on participants’ subjective self-assessments. They do not establish that ordinary gaming causes social harm. Read the review.

What to look at beyond hours played
To understand whether online play is supporting your social life, consider the relationships and interactions it involves rather than treating all gaming time as equivalent. Useful questions include:
- Do you enjoy talking or working toward shared goals with the people you play with?
- Are there people in the group you trust or can turn to for support, or is the connection mostly casual?
- Does gaming fit alongside the in-person relationships and activities you value, or is it crowding them out?
- Do the community’s norms make you feel welcome and respected?
Research on social gaming also has limitations: reviews note uneven attention to player diversity and context, reliance on mediated evaluations and measures that are not consistently established, and concerns about ecological validity. Findings across studies therefore describe possible patterns, not a guaranteed outcome for any individual.
