Open the Pip-Boy and check your carried weight against your limit. To stop being over-encumbered, drop, sell, store, or transfer enough items to a companion to get at or below that limit. If you need more room for future trips, raise Strength or take the Strong Back perk; Long Haul only lets you fast travel while still over the limit.
How to get under your carry limit now
- Check the weight display in your Pip-Boy. It shows your current carried weight and capacity.
- Remove enough weight to reach the limit. Sort through bulky equipment and supplies, then drop items you can retrieve, sell what you do not need, or place items in a container you know is safe.
- Transfer useful gear to a companion. Open the Companion Wheel and choose the companion’s inventory option to exchange items. This shifts weight off the Courier; do not assume a companion has unlimited capacity.
Being over the displayed capacity restricts movement and travel. The direct fix is reducing the current carried total—not changing a different stat or merely reaching a destination.

How to increase carry capacity
Raise Strength
The Fallout Wiki’s carry-weight reference gives the formula as 150 + (Strength × 10) pounds. Under that formula, each Strength point adds 10 pounds of capacity. This is a game-reference figure; modded setups may behave differently.
Take Strong Back
Strong Back adds 50 pounds of equipment capacity. The listed requirements are level 8, Endurance 5, and Strength 5, so it is not an immediate option for a character who has not met those requirements. Fallout Wiki: Strong Back

Need to fast travel before you sort your inventory?
The Long Haul perk permits fast travel while over-encumbered, according to the Fallout Wiki carry-weight reference. It is a travel workaround, not a carry-capacity increase: it does not make your inventory lighter or remove the movement restriction associated with carrying too much. Fallout Wiki: Carry weight
Should you use a console command?
On PC, commands such as player.modav carryweight and player.forceav carryweight can alter carry weight, but the community-maintained command reference warns that they may interfere with the normal capacity increase from Strength. Treat them as a last resort, especially if you want the character’s stats to keep scaling normally. Fallout Wiki: Fallout: New Vegas console commands

Bethesda Support says character-affecting console commands disable Steam achievements for the current play session. Its guidance for restoring them is: “To enable Steam Achievements, restart your play session and avoid using the console.” This warning is specific to Steam; it should not be generalized to every platform. First compare the displayed current weight and limit, and check your active Strength and any effects that might alter it. These are diagnostic checks, not a confirmed New Vegas-specific fix for a bugged weight display. If the numbers still appear inconsistent, consult support for your platform or the documentation for your mod setup rather than applying advice intended for another Fallout game.
