In battle, a move such as Iron Defense raises Defense temporarily. For a lasting build, train Defense effort values (EVs) using methods available in your game; in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, those include Iron, Resist Feathers, and battles with Pokémon that yield Defense EVs. The exact options depend on the game.
Do you want more Defense in battle or as a trained stat?
Raise Defense during a battle
Use a Defense-raising move such as Iron Defense if your Pokémon can learn it. This changes the Pokémon’s battle-stage Defense for the encounter; it does not replace longer-term training. The Pokémon community forum gives Iron Defense as an example of a move that raises Defense in battle.

Develop Defense over time
For longer-term stat development, train Defense EVs using the mechanics in your specific game. Items and training details vary by edition, so Scarlet and Violet instructions should not be treated as universal directions for every Pokémon game.
How to train Defense in Scarlet and Violet
Scarlet and Violet guides describe three ways to add Defense EVs. The figures below come from specialist guides, not an official mechanics manual, and should be read as Scarlet and Violet guidance.
#1 Best Overall
| Method | Defense EVs | When it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Iron vitamin | 10 per use, according to Serebii’s Scarlet/Violet Effort Values guide. | A larger increment when you want to add EVs through an item. |
| Resist Feather | 1 per use, according to Serebii’s Scarlet/Violet Effort Values guide. | A smaller increment for more precise adjustment. |
| Battle Pokémon that yield Defense EVs | Varies by the Pokémon defeated; consult an edition-specific EV guide for yields. | Training through battles instead of relying only on items. Gamer Guides’ Scarlet/Violet EV-training guide also describes vitamins and feathers as item-based EV methods. |
Iron and Resist Feather are in-game items, not physical products. Check your game’s own guide for where to obtain them and any applicable limits; do not assume the Scarlet and Violet values or availability apply to another edition.
How Nature affects Defense
Nature is a separate consideration from EV training. The official Pokémon Sword and Shield Nature Mints page explains that Mints alter a Pokémon’s stat-growth pattern without changing its underlying Nature. That page describes Sword and Shield; check the relevant game’s rules before applying its details elsewhere.

How much Defense should you train?
There is no universal Defense build. The right choice depends on the Pokémon, its role, the game and format, its moves, and whether it needs physical Defense, Special Defense, or more HP. Spending training points on Defense also means not spending them on other stats. The official 2025 Stuttgart VGC page shows Scarlet and Violet teams using combinations such as Iron Defense and Body Press, illustrating that move choices and stat investment are role-dependent—not a one-size-fits-all prescription.
- If your goal is to withstand physical attacks, consider whether Defense is the stat your build needs.
- If special attacks are the problem, look at Special Defense instead; it is a distinct stat.
- Consider HP alongside either defensive stat, since training one area uses resources or EV allocation that could go elsewhere.
- Choose a battle move such as Iron Defense only if it fits the Pokémon’s available moves and intended role.
Why the game edition matters
The question “How do I increase Defense?” has no single set of item instructions across the series. Official Sword and Shield information describes nutritious drinks such as Iron as raising base points that help raise stats, while Scarlet and Violet specialist guides give specific EV increments for Iron and Resist Feathers. Treat the methods and numbers as edition-specific, and consult the relevant game’s guidance before applying them.
