How King Built a Gaming Powerhouse—and What Its 2014 IPO Filing Revealed

King’s IPO filing documented a remarkable rise built on free-to-play games, mobile reach, and a portfolio—but also exposed how much the business depended on a few hits.

King’s 2014 IPO filing captured both sides of its rise: a free-to-play games business with extraordinary reach and growth, and a business whose top three games supplied 95% of gross bookings in the final quarter of 2013. Candy Crush Saga was the breakout, but the company’s scale came from a longer-running operation, a sequence of social and mobile launches, and a model that converted a small share of a large audience into paying customers.

King had a games business before Candy Crush

King’s prospectus traces its online-games operation to 2003. Its rise was not a single-game story from the outset: the company built and distributed a portfolio, then expanded from social games into mobile. Its first major Facebook launch was Bubble Witch Saga in September 2011. Candy Crush Saga followed on Facebook in April 2012, then Pet Rescue Saga in November 2012, Farm Heroes Saga in April 2013, and Papa Pear Saga in May 2013. King’s 2014 IPO prospectus presents these launches as part of the operating history behind its growth.

The order matters. King had experience making casual games and distributing them through social platforms before Candy Crush became its defining hit. The portfolio gave the company more than one title to develop and monetize, even though the filing later made clear that a few games dominated its results.

How King’s free-to-play model made money

King made its games available to play for free and sold virtual items to players who wanted to enhance their experience. Most users could play without paying; revenue depended on a subset choosing to buy. The company described its aim as capturing a modest share of customers’ entertainment spending, while prioritizing player loyalty and long-term retention.

CEO and co-founder Riccardo Zacconi wrote in the prospectus shareholder letter: “We have put the long-term retention of our players at the heart of our business model.” That is a statement of strategic intent, not independent proof of retention or a particular lifetime value. Advertising was a smaller part of the business by the time of the IPO: King reported that it accounted for 12% of revenue in 2011, 10% in 2012, and 1% in 2013.

Growth, reach, and mobile scale in the IPO filing

The company-reported figures show how rapidly King expanded in the period covered by the prospectus. Revenue rose from $64 million in 2011 to $164 million in 2012, then to $1.88 billion in 2013. King also reported $567.6 million in profit before tax for 2013. These are figures from the company’s 2014 IPO filing, not independent estimates.

King reported an average of 128 million daily active users in December 2013, playing its games more than 1.2 billion times per day. The prospectus put average DAUs at 144 million in February 2014. These daily-active-user figures refer to different months and should not be confused with the company’s monthly payer measure: at December 31, 2013, King reported approximately 12 million average monthly unique payers, around 4% of monthly unique users.

Mobile had become central to the business. In Q4 2013, 73% of King’s gross bookings came from its mobile audience. That is the filing’s gross-bookings measure, not a claim that mobile generated 73% of revenue or profit. The distinction matters because gross bookings, revenue, and profit describe different things.

The filing’s central warning: a few games carried the business

King’s reach was broad, but its bookings were not evenly distributed across the portfolio. The prospectus said its top three games—Candy Crush Saga, Pet Rescue Saga, and Farm Heroes Saga—accounted for 95% of total gross bookings in Q4 2013. Candy Crush was the largest by a wide margin: King reported 93 million DAUs for the game in December 2013 and 97 million in February 2014, while Pet Rescue had 15 million in each period.

This is the tension at the heart of the IPO story. A small payer share can support a very large business when the audience is enormous, but heavy dependence on a handful of titles leaves results exposed to shifts in those games’ popularity and monetization. King’s mobile scale also meant the business relied heavily on mobile distribution; the prospectus’s figures establish that exposure without, on their own, quantifying platform fees or policy effects.

Diversification improved in 2014, but did not eliminate hit risk

King’s next annual filing showed a broader contribution from games outside the Candy Crush franchise. In its 2015 Form 20-F, the company reported that non-Candy Crush games increased from 22% of gross bookings in Q4 2013 to 55% in Q4 2014. This is evidence of improved diversification across those periods; it does not establish that title concentration was permanently solved. King’s 2015 Form 20-F supplies that later comparison.

A subsequent risk discussion in Activision Blizzard’s 2018 Form 10-K continued to identify dependence on a relatively small number of consumers and the challenge of developing and monetizing free-to-play games. It also described the risk that players might not continue buying virtual currency and items. Those statements are risks disclosed in that filing, not a measurement of King’s performance today. Activision Blizzard’s 2018 Form 10-K records that later caution.

What the IPO price and first trading day do—and do not—say

King set its IPO price at $22.50 per share in March 2014. Contemporaneous coverage reported that the stock fell on its first day of trading. That is a description of the market’s initial reception at the offering, not a verdict on the intrinsic value of the business or its long-term prospects. BBC News reported the first-day decline.

What King’s filing teaches about hit-driven game businesses

  • A hit is often built on an operating system. King’s earlier casual-games experience, social launches, mobile expansion, and portfolio preceded and supported the Candy Crush breakout.
  • Reach and payer conversion are different measures. The company reported huge DAU totals alongside a much smaller payer share, so audience scale should not be mistaken for broad payment participation.
  • Growth can mask concentration. Strong financial results do not remove the risk of relying on a few titles for most bookings.
  • Diversification must be sustained. The later increase in non-Candy Crush bookings shows progress over a specific year, while the later risk filing underscores the continuing need to make games players keep playing and buying within.
