Equip an Elytra in your chestplate slot, step off a safe height, and press your jump input while falling to start gliding. Once you are airborne, select a Firework Rocket and use your configured item-use control to boost. Elytra let you glide; they do not provide ordinary powered flight.
How to launch and boost with an Elytra
- Equip the Elytra: Put it in your chestplate armor slot. Minecraft’s Elytra guide describes this as the required equipment for gliding.
- Get ready: Carry Firework Rockets in an accessible inventory slot and move to a safe elevated place with open space ahead.
- Start gliding: Step off the ledge, then press your jump input while falling. This is the launch method described in Minecraft’s official Elytra guidance; jumping from level ground is not the standard procedure it gives.
- Use a rocket: While gliding, select a Firework Rocket and activate it with your device’s configured item-use control. In Java Edition 1.21.6, Mojang says rocket use while gliding triggers a boost even if a block could otherwise receive the rocket. That release note documents Java 1.21.6 behavior, not a complete comparison with Bedrock.
How to control your glide
Aim down to gain speed and aim up to slow your descent. Give yourself room to turn: sharp turns reduce speed, according to Minecraft’s Elytra guide.
Which button uses a Firework Rocket?
There is no single button to name for every player. The item-use input depends on whether you play with keyboard and mouse, a controller, or touchscreen controls, and it can be customized. Check Minecraft’s Controls settings for your device; the official controls overview covers those input types and notes that controls can be changed. It does not provide a rocket-specific mapping for every device.

What to keep in mind
- Elytra belong in the chestplate slot.
- Begin the glide by falling and pressing jump while falling.
- Use a rocket only after the glide has started, with your configured item-use input.
- The rocket-use detail about boosting instead of placing against a targeted block is specifically documented for Java Edition 1.21.6.
