In WoW Classic Era, budget 100 gold for a standard level-40 mount with no discounts: 20 gold for riding training and 80 gold for the mount itself. “Classic WoW” can also mean other modes; Season of Discovery has a reported 50-gold total, so the mode matters.
Classic Era level-40 mount costs
The standard Classic Era price is split between riding training and the mount item. Warcraft Tavern’s guide reports these costs and two possible discounts:
| Case | Training and mount | Total |
|---|---|---|
| No discount | 20 gold training + 80 gold mount | 100 gold |
| One discount | 10% off for Honored reputation with the relevant race faction, or PvP Rank 3 | 90 gold |
| Both discounts | 10% off for Honored reputation and 10% off at PvP Rank 3 | 80 gold |
The discount figures and baseline are reported by Warcraft Tavern’s WoW Classic mount guide. Treat 100 gold as the straightforward no-discount budget; the guide is a secondary source rather than a current Blizzard price table.
Check the game mode before budgeting
Classic WoW has multiple modes, and the price should not be assumed to carry across them. A Season of Discovery guide reports a total of 50 gold for a level-40 mount. Confirm the rules for the mode and realm you play rather than applying Classic Era’s 100-gold figure automatically.

Paladin and Warlock mounts are exceptions
Paladins and Warlocks obtain their level-40 mounts through class quests rather than simply buying the ordinary vendor mount. The quests can involve gold and materials, and the total depends on the route and items involved. The ordinary 100-gold budget is therefore not a universal price for these classes. Historical mechanics and class-quest context appear in a Blizzard-hosted forum discussion and in a Paladin class-mount quest guide.

Ordinary level-40 mounts increase movement speed by 60%, according to the class-mount guide and the Blizzard-hosted discussion. The discussion also reproduces a Blizzard statement about the riding-skill structure after Patch 1.12.1; that is historical context, not a current price quote.
