To access Project Zomboid’s Build 42 Unstable branch on Steam, open the game’s Library properties and choose Unstable under Game Versions & Betas. As of October 8, 2026, The Indie Stone lists Build 42.21 as both Stable and Unstable, so the branch is for testing rather than access to a newer numbered build.

How to switch Project Zomboid to the Unstable branch on Steam

  1. Open Library in the Steam client and find Project Zomboid.
  2. Right-click the game and select Properties.
  3. Open Game Versions & Betas.
  4. Select Unstable. The Indie Stone’s Build 42.21 Unstable announcement gives these branch-selection instructions.

Steam may need to download or update game files after the branch change. The announcement does not specify a guaranteed download prompt or restart sequence, so follow any instructions shown by Steam.

Which Build 42 version is current?

As of October 8, 2026, The Indie Stone’s site lists 42.21 Stable and 42.21 Unstable. Branch labels can change as patches arrive; check the 42.21 Stable announcement and the game’s current branch information for the latest status.

Unstable is a testing channel where players try updates and provide feedback. The developer describes the cadence as updates going to Unstable for testing, potentially receiving further changes, and ultimately moving to Stable. Unstable builds may be buggy, as the official Project Zomboid game page cautions.

Will switching to Unstable affect your save?

Back up your existing save manually before trying the branch. In its 42.21 Unstable announcement, The Indie Stone says existing Build 42.20.4 saves should not be affected by the update, but still strongly recommends making a backup. That is not a guarantee for every save or future update.

Can you access Build 42 Unstable on GOG?

The current Build 42.21 access announcement gives instructions for Steam and does not establish that this specific build is available on GOG. The Indie Stone says test builds are sometimes also updated as GOG betas “when possible”; that conditional general guidance is not confirmation of current GOG access.

Where should you report Unstable bugs?

Use The Indie Stone forums for feedback and bug reports. The 42.21 Unstable announcement directs bug reporters to read the reporting guidance and post in the Bug Report forums. It warns that reports posted elsewhere, especially on Discord, may be lost or may not be investigated.
