When you find one, descend by a safe route and explore the connected caverns, then confirm the biome by its moss, spore blossoms, clay pools and other distinctive plants. There is no dependable fixed depth or coordinate to dig to.
Use an azalea tree as your starting point
Search the surface for an azalea tree, then investigate underground in that area. Minecraft’s Help page says lush caves are typically found below azalea trees. Mojang’s Java Edition 1.18 release article describes the tree as a sign that there is a lush cave beneath it. Taken together, the tree is the strongest official surface clue, but it is not a guarantee that a cave entrance will be directly underneath.
Descend safely and explore nearby caverns
Do not dig straight down. Mojang’s lush-caves feature article recommends digging down, “but not straight down, obviously.” Follow a slope or use an existing opening, and explore the caves you reach around the azalea-tree area. The official guidance does not give a block distance, fixed Y-level or guaranteed route from the tree to the biome, so keep exploring rather than relying on a specific coordinate.
Confirm the biome by its features
Once underground, look for several of these signs together:

- Spore blossoms hanging from cave ceilings.
- Clay pools with dripleaf plants.
- Azalea bushes growing among the cave vegetation.
- Cave vines with glow berries, which can light the area.
Minecraft’s biome help lists moss, azalea bushes, cave vines, glow berries, dripleaf and spore blossoms. Mojang’s Java 1.18 release notes also describe mossy floors and ceilings, ceiling-hung spore blossoms, clay pools with dripleaf, and glow-berry vines. A cluster of these details is a better confirmation than a lone plant or patch of moss.
If you have not found an azalea tree
You can still explore an accessible cave system and watch for the same visual cues. That may lead you to a lush cave, but the official guidance identifies azalea trees as the surface indicator and does not establish ordinary cave exploration as an equally reliable locator. If you find moss, dripleaf, spore blossoms and glow-berry vines together, inspect the surrounding cavern for more of the biome’s features.

What to know about versions
Lush caves were included among the Overworld biomes and generation changes in the Java Edition 1.18 release. An earlier Java snapshot, 21w10a, had a temporary limitation: lush caves were available only in single-biome worlds and did not generate in other world types. That snapshot restriction should not be confused with the released 1.18 guidance.
Specific creature details can also be version-dependent. Mojang’s Java 1.18 release article says axolotls spawn in lush caves only in water above clay blocks under that release’s mechanics. Treat that as a Java 1.18 detail, not a rule established here for every edition and later version. For finding the biome, its plants and terrain are the more useful clues.
