NYT Connections puzzle #379, published Monday, June 24, 2024, groups words about tenderness, restaurant courses, animal homophones and phrases beginning with “red.” If you want to solve it yourself first, use the gradual hints below before revealing the complete answer.

Hints for Connections #379

These hints move from subtle to more direct. Stop when you have enough to finish a group.

  1. Look for words that can describe skin or another area that hurts when touched.
  2. Think about the parts of a meal, from the first course through dessert.
  3. Say the words aloud and listen for animal names.
  4. Each remaining word follows the same color adjective to make a familiar phrase.

Answers for June 24, 2024

Spoilers: The four groups and their words are below.

Yellow: SORE TO THE TOUCH

  • DELICATE
  • RAW
  • SENSITIVE
  • TENDER

These words can describe skin or a body part that is painful, easily hurt or sensitive to contact.

Green: RESTAURANT COURSES

  • DESSERT
  • MAIN
  • SIDE
  • STARTER

Each is a part of a restaurant meal: a starter, main course, side and dessert.

Blue: ANIMAL HOMOPHONES

  • BARE (bear)
  • DEAR (deer)
  • MOUSSE (moose)
  • NEW (gnu)

The words sound like animal names, though their spellings differ. The last pair is especially easy to miss if you look only for written similarities.

Purple: RED ___

  • CARPET
  • DELICIOUS
  • MEAT
  • TAPE

Add RED before each word to make red carpet, Red Delicious, red meat and red tape.

How to approach the trickier groups

A useful route through this grid is to identify the restaurant courses, then test the remaining vocabulary for words connected with soreness or touch. For the less literal categories, switch how you read the words: say them aloud to uncover the animal sounds, then look for a shared phrase completion in the final set.

That change in approach matters because Connections is designed around overlapping possibilities. The New York Times explains that each puzzle has 16 words to arrange into four groups of four, with yellow the easiest category and purple the trickiest. Its Help Center notes that words may appear to fit more than one category even though each puzzle has one solution: NYT Connections Help.
