In Red Dead Redemption 2 Story Mode, the quickest reliable start is a one-time gold-bar pickup in Chapter 2: take it from the ruined Limpany Sheriff’s Office and sell it to a Fence. Then pursue a treasure-map chain such as Jack Hall Gang for another large, finite payout. For ongoing money, loot after fights and take available bounties. Robberies may pay more at once, but bring greater wanted and honor risks. Red Dead Online has a separate economy, so its roles and rewards should not be confused with Story Mode gold bars.
First, choose the right mode
Story Mode and Red Dead Online use different progression and reward systems. The gold-bar prices and treasure routes below apply to Story Mode only. Rockstar’s official product page describes Red Dead Online separately and lists roles including Bounty Hunter, Trader, Collector, Moonshiner, and Naturalist; it also explains that Gold Bars unlock online goods. Do not assume a Story Mode payout applies online.

Story Mode: start with the early one-time payouts
Get the Limpany gold bar in Chapter 2
In Chapter 2, search the lock box under the desk in the ruined Sheriff’s Office at Limpany. Hold To Reset and Fullclear both report that a Fence buys this bar for $500. Hold To Reset identifies the Emerald Ranch Fence as a nearby option once unlocked. This is a guide-reported standard sale value, not an official Rockstar payout table.
Follow a treasure-map chain
The Jack Hall Gang chain is an approachable follow-up. Hold To Reset reports that its first map can be bought from Maximo near Flatneck Station for $10 and that the final cache contains two gold bars. The same guide also names Poisonous Trail and High Stakes as other treasure chains. Treasure caches can contain gold bars, cash, or valuables, but these are finite finds rather than repeatable income.

Loot after combat
Search enemy bodies after fights, and check abandoned buildings, drawers, and chests for cash and valuables. Loot before triggering a mission transition when practical: the opportunity to search bodies may disappear once the next scene begins.
Take bounties for repeatable income
Bounties are repeatable and generally lower-risk than robbery. Hold To Reset estimates $50–$150 per target and says delivering the target alive can improve the reward; actual payouts depend on the target and circumstances, so treat that range as an estimate rather than a promise.
Rank #2
- When federal agents threaten his family, former outlaw John Marston is forced to hunt down the gang of criminals he once called friends.
- Experience Marston’s journey across the sprawling expanses of the American West and Mexico as he fights to bury his blood-stained past in the critically acclaimed predecessor to the 2018 blockbuster, Red Dead Redemption 2.
- Also included is Undead Nightmare, the iconic horror story that transforms the world of Red Dead Redemption into an apocalyptic fight for survival against a zombie horde.
Sell hunting goods
Hunting can add repeatable income, especially when you bring in high-quality pelts. Fullclear notes that animal quality and a clean kill with a suitable weapon affect pelt quality. Hold To Reset reports 16 Legendary Animals and estimates $50–$200 per legendary pelt; that is a guide estimate, not a guaranteed return. It also says pelts are sent to the Trapper if your horse is killed.
Robbery can pay more, but raises the stakes
Hold To Reset estimates $100–$500 or more from a train or stagecoach robbery, while Fullclear describes a risk ladder from lone travelers and coaches to shops and trains. Those figures are estimates, not assured profit. Robberies can trigger wanted pressure and a bounty, and may cost honor, so they are a situational choice rather than the safest default.

Stretch cash with high honor
High honor does not put money in your pocket, but it can reduce what you spend. Hold To Reset reports store discounts of up to 50% for maximum honor. Treat this as a guide-reported saving, not a source of income.
Which Story Mode method fits your situation?
| Method | Timing and repeatability | Value reported by guides | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Limpany gold bar | Available from Chapter 2; one-time find | $500 at a Fence, reported by Hold To Reset and Fullclear | Requires reaching a Fence to cash it in |
| Jack Hall Gang treasure chain | One-time chain; first map reported near Flatneck Station | Two gold bars at the final cache; Hold To Reset also reports a $10 price for the first map | Requires following the chain and traveling to the cache |
| Looting | Repeatable when opportunities arise during play | No fixed payout stated by the guides | Search before mission transitions remove the opportunity |
| Bounties | Repeatable | $50–$150 per target estimated by Hold To Reset | Payout varies; delivering the target alive may improve it |
| Hunting | Repeatable | $50–$200 per legendary pelt estimated by Hold To Reset | Quality, weapon choice, and a clean kill affect pelt value |
| Train or stagecoach robbery | Repeatable opportunity, but not guaranteed profit | $100–$500+ estimated by Hold To Reset | Wanted status, bounty, and honor consequences |
The figures in this comparison come from the 2026 guides Hold To Reset and Fullclear; they are reported gameplay values, not controlled comparisons or guaranteed earnings. For a large early boost, choose the finite gold and treasure payouts; for money while progressing, loot and take bounties. Consider robbery only if you accept its consequences.

Red Dead Online: use roles and check current events
Online income comes through its own activities and roles, including Bounty Hunter, Trader, Collector, Moonshiner, and Naturalist. Rockstar explains that Gold Bars unlock online goods, but Story Mode’s $500 Fence sale and treasure-map rewards do not transfer to Online. Bonuses can change month to month; check Rockstar’s latest Newswire announcements for a currently active event rather than relying on an expired promotion.
