Connections #897 answers
| Color | Category | Words |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | Small kitchen appliances | BLENDER, MICROWAVE, RICE COOKER, TOASTER |
| Green | Features of a car’s center console | AIR CONDITIONER, CUP HOLDER, RADIO, SHIFTER |
| Blue | Seen while going through airport security | BIN, CARRY-ON, METAL DETECTOR, X-RAY |
| Purple | Ending in colors | INFRARED, MARIGOLD, STINGRAY, ULTRAVIOLET |
Why the color-ending group is easy to miss
The purple connection is about word form, not a shared subject: INFRARED ends in RED, MARIGOLD in GOLD, STINGRAY in GRAY, and ULTRAVIOLET in VIOLET. The colors appear at the ends of the complete words.

The tempting science overlap
MICROWAVE, RADIO, X-RAY, INFRARED, and ULTRAVIOLET can suggest an electromagnetic-spectrum group. But that is five words, while Connections groups contain four. TechRadar’s solve account describes trying RADIO, MICROWAVE, X-RAY, and INFRARED, then abandoning that grouping and using RICE COOKER with the kitchen appliances. Here, the useful distinction is between a plausible subject-based link and the purple group’s word-ending pattern.
A useful check when a theme seems convincing
Before committing to a group, check whether the theme fits exactly four words and whether any remaining words support a stronger alternative. This puzzle rewards noticing both ordinary object meanings—such as kitchen appliances and car-console features—and a less obvious word-form connection. The five-word overlap is a reminder to test the count rather than treating a familiar theme as proof.
