Before selling an Xbox One, back up your settings, reset the console to factory defaults, then remove the console from your Microsoft account. Microsoft recommends removing personal information before selling, gifting or recycling an Xbox One.
1. Back up your Xbox One settings
Microsoft’s sale-preparation guidance directs Xbox owners to back up settings before resetting. Follow Microsoft’s Back up your settings instructions. The guidance available here does not establish which settings are included or the detailed backup steps, so consult the linked support page for the current procedure rather than assuming particular data is covered.

2. Reset the console to factory defaults
Use Microsoft’s Reset your console to factory defaults on Xbox instructions. Microsoft’s sale-preparation page links to this reset guidance, but the page’s reset options and menu navigation are not established in the accessible information here. Follow the instructions displayed by Xbox Support or on your console; do not assume a particular reset option or that the reset deletes cloud data or your Microsoft account.
3. Remove the reset console from your Microsoft account
- Sign in to the Microsoft account devices page.
- Find the Xbox One and select Show details.
- Select More actions > Remove.
- Confirm that you’re ready to remove the device, then select Remove.
Microsoft also describes an Unlink action for removing the device’s Microsoft Store association. This is separate from removing the console from the account device list.

- Complete the settings backup, factory reset and account-device removal.
- Microsoft advises removing personal information before selling, gifting or recycling the console.
- Do not treat a factory reset as proof that your Microsoft account or cloud data has been deleted; Microsoft’s sale-preparation guidance does not make either claim.
Microsoft’s recommendation appears on its device sale and recycling preparation page, which also links to the Xbox backup and reset instructions.
