Connections asks players to sort 16 words into four groups of four. For #899, the tiles were JAN, SEC, IRA, MAR, APR, KAT, GOD, MAY, FLOW, DEB, CAN, TAB, COULD, CFO, SUE, and MIGHT. Forbes reports that players can make three incorrect guesses before a fourth wrong guess ends the game (Forbes).
| Group | Category | Tiles |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | Verbs expressing possibility | CAN, COULD, MAY, MIGHT |
| Green | Women’s nicknames | DEB, JAN, KAT, SUE |
| Blue | Financial abbreviations | APR, CFO, IRA, SEC |
| Purple | Animals spelled backward | FLOW, GOD, MAR, TAB |
Why the groups fit
Yellow: verbs expressing possibility
CAN, COULD, MAY, and MIGHT can all express possibility. MAY and MIGHT can also be used to ask permission, but possibility is the shared link intended here.
Green: women’s nicknames
DEB, JAN, KAT, and SUE are short forms or nicknames for women’s names.
#1 Best Overall
Blue: financial abbreviations
APR, CFO, IRA, and SEC are the puzzle’s finance-related abbreviations.
Purple: animals spelled backward
Read each tile from right to left: FLOW becomes WOLF, GOD becomes DOG, MAR becomes RAM, and TAB becomes BAT. All four results are animals.
Rank #2
The month-abbreviation red herring
JAN, MAR, APR, and MAY look like the first three letters of months, but they do not form a solution group. Each belongs to a different intended set: JAN is a nickname, APR is a financial abbreviation, MAY is a possibility verb, and MAR spells RAM backward. The overlap rewards checking whether a pattern accounts for every tile and fits a precise shared relationship—not just whether four words look alike.
