If you want to complete the original Wild Gods questline instead, you can earn the Rune of the Knight by collecting three Wild Offerings.
Get Sword and Board from a Rune Broker
Visit a Rune Broker in a starting area or major city and purchase the Sword and Board rune or its associated discovery item. Blizzard announced that Rune Brokers sell all runes and rune-related discovery items for one copper each: Blizzard’s Phase 7 announcement.
Rune Brokers were introduced in starting areas with access to all class runes at level 1, according to Blizzard’s December 17, 2024 hotfix note. Blizzard also cautioned that some discoveries may not work properly if you learn the related rune ability from a vendor-bought item. If completing the original in-world discovery matters to you, follow the quest route below rather than buying the rune first: Blizzard’s announcement and hotfix information.
Complete the original Wild Gods questline
The original route is a level 50 minimum quest chain involving elite enemies and dungeon encounters. The steps below follow Wowhead’s guide: Sword and Board rune guide.

- Pick up The Wild Gods. Find Shadowtooth Emissary at Emerald Sanctuary in Felwood (coordinates 51.5, 82). Each character must pick up this starting quest individually.
- Get a Wildwhisper Draught. Kill elite trolls in Jinth’Alor, in the Hinterlands, until one member of your group obtains the draught. Only one party member needs one.
- Summon Spirit of Agamaggan. In Razorfen Downs, clear the area around Amnennar the Coldbringer. One player should use the draught to summon the spirit, then speak with it to receive the quest continuation and Agamaggan’s Roar.
- Collect three Wild Offerings. Use Agamaggan’s Roar near the relevant ghostly mob to make a level 52 elite Delirious Ancient hostile. Each Ancient drops one Wild Offering. You may repeat the same dungeon; you do not need to visit all three.
- Return to Shadowtooth Emissary. Turn in the three Wild Offerings to receive the Rune of the Knight, which is associated with Sword and Board.
Choose one of these dungeon encounters for each offering
- Zul’Farrak: Clear any three bosses to spawn a Ghostly Spider.
- Maraudon: Clear the area near Princess Theradras. A Ghostly Raptor appears in the upper-level water near the turtles.
- Blackrock Depths: Defeat High Interrogator Gerstahn and Houndmaster Grebmar, then complete the Ring of Law event to spawn a Ghostly Basilisk.
Use the alt-token route if you have already completed the quest
After completing the questline on one character, Wowhead’s guide says an alternate character can use an Emblem of the Wild Gods. Buy it from Pix Xizzix in Booty Bay and redeem it at a Rune Broker. Check the vendor’s current inventory in game, since patch details can change.

Sword and Board is a passive Warrior bracer rune. When Devastate or Revenge deals damage, it has a 30% chance to refresh Shield Slam’s cooldown and make Shield Slam cost no Rage for five seconds. See the Sword and Board spell details.
