To get promoted in The Sims 4’s Reaper career, meet the next-rank requirements shown in the Career panel and complete the Scored Career Event tasks during active workdays. The ten-rank career mixes Thanatology, Fitness and Charisma skill targets with soul-release milestones and, at one rank, writing a Reaping Manual. Reaper is an active career included in the Life & Death Expansion Pack.
Reaper career promotion requirements by rank
EA’s Reaper career guide lists the following requirements to advance from each rank. Rank 10 is the top of the career; its listed requirement is to go to work.

These are the requirements EA lists for promotion in its Reaper career guide. Check the Career panel in your game as you progress; it displays the requirements for your Sim’s current rank.
How to track promotion tasks during a shift
- In Live Mode, open the briefcase-shaped Career panel at the lower right of the screen and review your Sim’s schedule and promotion requirements.
- On an active workday, choose to attend work. Attending is itself a task for the first rank’s promotion.
- Once the shift begins, follow the Scored Career Event checklist in the upper-left area of the screen. Tasks vary by rank, so use the current checklist as your guide for that shift.
EA describes Reaper as an active career: you can accompany your Sim to work and direct their duties. The in-game checklist is the authority for what your Sim needs to do that day; do not assume every shift assigns the same actions.

- Develop Parenting Skills – Level up your Sim’s parenting skills to satisfy their child’s needs and influence their behaviors. Gain new abilities through experience and choosing when to discipline bad actions, encourage good behavior, or just let kids be kids.
- Shape Your Sim’s Childhood – The decisions you make influence how your Sim parents and leave a lasting impact on their child’s future. Each choice shapes their personality, affects their traits, influences their family relationships, and guides their path into adulthood.
- Gather your Sim’s family to participate in new activities and spend quality time with each other. Sims of all ages can work together to complete a variety of school projects, express their creativity using construction blocks, or volunteer their time for good.
- Customize your Sims’ looks and their home with new family fashion and build items. Give the kids’ bedrooms extra personality, remodel the kitchen to feel homier, and let your Sims express their sporty or artistic sides with new outfits.
How to build the required skills
Thanatology
Thanatology is a five-level skill included with Life & Death. EA says Sims can build it by progressing in the Reaper career, using eligible social interactions, researching theories on a computer, or reading skill books. A bookshelf also offers the “Look up Historical Deaths” interaction. If you own Discover University, a skill-building class is another option and costs §250.
For each rank’s exact target, use the skill panel and compare it with the ladder above. The career calls for Thanatology levels 2, 3, 4 and 5 at different points.

Fitness and Charisma
Fitness and Charisma are needed at the Collections Agent, Spirit Expert and D.N.R. transitions shown in the rank table. The listed targets are the promotion requirements; check your Sim’s skill panel to see current levels.
How to write the Reaping Manual
At Spirit Expert (Extraction & Resolution), use a computer and select Write > Write Genre Book > Reapers Creepers: Training Manual Installment. Completing this interaction fulfills the Reaping Manual requirement for the next promotion.

How soul-release milestones work
The career’s soul-release requirements rise as your Sim advances: release 3 souls before Dust-To-Dust Buster, 5 before Soul Slayer and 10 before Graveling. Keep an eye on the event checklist during work; it shows the tasks assigned for the current shift. EA describes Reapers as working with Grim and helping souls move to their next phase, but the exact actions presented can vary.
Optional shortcut: promote with a cheat
If you prefer to skip the normal requirements, EA documents the Reaper promotion cheat. Cheats advance one rank at a time, and you can repeat the command to reach the top.
