Can blue axolotls spawn naturally?
For Java Edition, Mojang’s 1.17.1 release notes state that blue axolotls can now only be obtained through breeding. The official Bedrock changelog likewise describes blue as a rare breeding mutation. In vanilla survival, breeding is the method to pursue.

How to breed axolotls for a blue baby
- Find or gather two axolotls. Minecraft’s axolotl explainer says they spawn in lush caves around underwater clay blocks. Use a water bucket to pick up and transport them if needed.
- Get buckets of tropical fish. Axolotls breed when fed tropical fish in buckets; the fish item alone is not the input specified in the official Bedrock changelog. The original Java snapshot notes that tropical fish or tropical fish buckets could be used, but the later official guidance specifies buckets.
- Place both adults in a safe water area and feed each one. A baby axolotl will appear. Keep the adults available and repeat after their breeding cooldown.
- Check the baby’s color. The Minecraft Wiki’s axolotl farming guide reports a 1-in-1,200 chance for a blue baby per breeding event.
- Carry the blue axolotl safely if you need to move it. A water bucket can pick up and transport axolotls.
What are the odds of breeding a blue axolotl?
The 1-in-1,200 figure comes from the Minecraft Wiki farming guide, not a published official Mojang probability. It describes the chance for each baby, not a threshold: 1,200 births do not guarantee a blue axolotl. Each attempt remains a chance, so a run of non-blue babies does not make the next birth more likely.
How long do repeated attempts take?
The same secondary mechanics guide reports parent cooldowns of five minutes in Java Edition and one minute in Bedrock Edition. It also reports that babies normally take 20 minutes to mature, with growth accelerated by feeding. These are guide-reported mechanics figures; the cited official pages do not establish them as current official timing guidance.
