Connections game #870, for Tuesday, October 28, 2025, groups its tiles around stale expressions, being in the know, remote-control buttons, and singers hidden by removing a starting letter. Try the clues below before opening the full answer key.

Progressive hints for Connections #870

  1. One group contains words for familiar, overused ideas or expressions.
  2. Another group describes someone who knows what is going on.
  3. Look for four labels you might see on a remote control.
  4. For the last group, remove the first letter from each tile to reveal a one-named singer.

The 16 tiles

PELVIS, CHESTNUT, HOME, HIP, SELECT, GUSHER, TROPE, BACK, KENYA, WISE, MENU, CLICHÉ, AWARE, OCHER, PLATITUDE, SAVVY.

Full answers for October 28, 2025

Spoilers below: the category names and all four groups are revealed here.

Yellow — Banality

CHESTNUT, CLICHÉ, PLATITUDE, TROPE

Each can refer to something familiar or overused. A chestnut is an old, familiar joke or saying; a cliché and a trope are familiar expressions or conventions; and a platitude is a trite remark.

Green — In the know

AWARE, HIP, SAVVY, WISE

These words can describe someone informed, alert, or knowledgeable about what is going on.

Blue — Remote-control buttons

BACK, HOME, MENU, SELECT

These are function labels found on remote controls. The link is their use as interface buttons, rather than their other meanings.

Purple — One-named singer plus a starting letter

GUSHER, KENYA, OCHER, PELVIS

Remove the first letter of each tile and the remaining letters spell the singers’ names: GUSHER becomes USHER, KENYA becomes ENYA, OCHER becomes CHER, and PELVIS becomes ELVIS.

A useful way to work through the board

Start with the two semantic clusters: the words for stale or familiar ideas, then the words for being informed. Next, consider BACK, HOME, MENU, and SELECT as interface labels. That leaves the four tiles whose remaining letters name singers. This is a practical solving route based on the groups, not an official order.
