Craft the Portable Refiner with 1 Metal Plating and 30 Oxygen, place it where you need it, add Carbon or Condensed Carbon fuel, load one resource, and select Begin. When refining finishes, collect the output before picking up the machine. For recipes that combine ingredients, use a Medium or Large Refiner instead.
How to craft the Portable Refiner
The Portable Refiner’s listed crafting recipe is 1 Metal Plating and 30 Oxygen. Its blueprint is described as always known, so you do not need to unlock it first. The recipe and blueprint information comes from community references, not an official Hello Games support page: Portable Refiner reference and No Man’s Sky Resources.
How to use it in the field
- Place the refiner. Deploy it from your inventory at the location where you want to process materials. It is a portable field device and takes one inventory slot when carried.
- Add fuel. Put Carbon or Condensed Carbon in the fuel slot, also called the Fuel Inverter. Published references disagree about the amount needed for a full charge, so use the in-game fuel meter rather than relying on a universal quantity.
- Load one resource. Put a single resource into the input slot. The Portable Refiner processes one input at a time.
- Start processing. Select Begin and let the process run.
- Collect the result. Remove the refined material from the output slot before picking up the device.
What the Portable Refiner can—and cannot—process
One-input recipes
Use the Portable Refiner for recipes that start with one resource, such as Ferrite Dust into Pure Ferrite. It can also refine Runaway Mould into Nanite Clusters. The No Man’s Sky Wiki’s guide, last updated August 31, 2026, lists a ratio of 5 Runaway Mould to 1 Nanite Cluster and 1 Salvaged Data to 15 Nanites. These are recipe ratios reported by that community guide, not independently verified performance or profitability claims. Recipes with multiple ingredients
The Portable Refiner cannot combine two or more ingredients. Use a Medium Refiner for recipes requiring two inputs or a Large Refiner for recipes requiring three. These are installations for a base or freighter, rather than portable field equipment. Before picking it up or leaving it unattended
Empty the input and output slots before collecting the Portable Refiner. The Portable Refiner reference says remaining fuel is returned as Carbon when the device is picked up. Sources differ on whether contents can remain safely in a refiner when you leave the area, so collect output promptly and do not use the machine as storage. Two community references publish different full-charge amounts: the Portable Refiner reference lists 100 Carbon or 34 Condensed Carbon, while No Man’s Sky Resources lists 150 Carbon or 50 Condensed Carbon. The discrepancy is unresolved, and neither page establishes a patch-specific explanation for it.
