- Purple — ___ ROLL: CALIFORNIA, DRUM, EGG, HONOR
The 16 words on the board were CARGO, BOULDER, CLAW, HAMMER, ANVIL, HORN, CALIFORNIA, COYOTE, EGG, STIRRUP, DRUM, TNT, CAPRI, HOOF, HONOR, and NAIL.
Why the words belong together
Yellow: Made of keratin
CLAW, HOOF, HORN, and NAIL are hard structures made primarily of keratin, the same structural protein found in hair and the outer layer of skin.
Green: Road Runner cartoon staples
COYOTE points to Wile E. Coyote, while ANVIL, BOULDER, and TNT are familiar props from his repeated attempts to catch the Road Runner.

Blue: Kinds of pants
CAPRI and CARGO are recognizable trouser styles. HAMMER and STIRRUP are also kinds of pants: hammer pants have a loose, low-hanging cut, while stirrup pants have a strap that passes under the foot.
Purple: ___ ROLL
Each word completes a familiar phrase when followed by “roll”: California roll, drum roll, egg roll, and honor roll.
How Connections works
Connections presents 16 words and asks players to sort them into four groups of four based on a shared link. The game allows four mistakes. For this board, spotting the familiar “___ roll” phrases offers a clear starting point; the cartoon connection and the two less obvious pants terms help separate the remaining words.
