BIRTHDAY, COCKTAIL, DINNER, and SURPRISE make the most direct set: each can describe a kind of party. EXTRA, HYPER, OVER, and SUPER share the intensifier pattern, as in extra-large or superhuman. Once those groups are removed, the remaining tiles divide into PBS program titles and French places. Recognizing FRONTLINE, MASTERPIECE, NATURE, and NOVA depends on knowing the shows; the last set mixes cities, a region, and an overseas department, which makes the geographic connection less uniform than a group of four cities.
The answer guides report Connections as a board of 16 words sorted into four groups of four, with colors progressing from yellow through purple in increasing difficulty. That convention explains the color labels here; it is not presented as a quotation from official NYT rules.
