The October 3, 2024, NYT Connections puzzle is #480. Its groups are beverages; ways to care for a plant; items sold in pairs; and words that become bugs when you remove their first letter. Spoiler-light hints come first, followed by the complete answer key.

- Yellow: Four things you can drink.
- Green: Four actions that help a plant grow or stay healthy.
- Blue: Four objects commonly bought or used as a pair.
- Purple: Remove the first letter from each word to reveal a small creature.

- Yellow — BEVERAGES: JUICE, MILK, PUNCH, SODA
- Green — CARE FOR A PLANT: FERTILIZE, POT, PRUNE, WATER
- Blue — ITEM SOLD IN PAIRS: BOOKEND, EARBUD, SKI, SOCK
- Purple — BUGS PLUS STARTING LETTER: BLOUSE, PANT, SMITE, STICK
Why the groups fit
Yellow: beverages
JUICE, MILK, PUNCH, and SODA are all drinks.
Green: care for a plant
FERTILIZE, POT, PRUNE, and WATER are actions used to care for a plant.
Blue: items sold in pairs
BOOKEND, EARBUD, SKI, and SOCK are each commonly treated as one of a pair.
Purple: bugs plus a starting letter
Each word begins with an extra letter: BLOUSE becomes LOUSE, PANT becomes ANT, SMITE becomes MITE, and STICK becomes TICK when its first letter is removed.
