New York Times Connections puzzle #318 was published on April 24, 2024. Its four categories are Taco Toppings, Metric Prefixes, Kinds of Skirts, and Words with “Hill.” If you want to solve it yourself first, start with the clear food grouping, then look for the shared word that completes four familiar names or terms.
Hints for Connections #318
- One group contains four additions commonly served with tacos.
- Four entries are metric prefixes, spanning very large and very small quantities.
- Look for three named skirt styles and one skirt length.
- For the trickiest connection, place the same word after each entry to make a name or compound word.
Connections #318 answers
The board contains CAPITOL, ONION, KILO, FOOT, MEGA, POODLE, WRAP, LIME, MOLE, SALSA, MICRO, FAITH, MINI, CILANTRO, PENCIL, and PICO. The solution groups them as follows:
| Category | Words |
|---|---|
| Taco Toppings | CILANTRO, LIME, ONION, SALSA |
| Metric Prefixes | KILO, MEGA, MICRO, PICO |
| Kinds of Skirts | MINI, PENCIL, POODLE, WRAP |
| Words with “Hill” | CAPITOL, FAITH, FOOT, MOLE |
Why the groups fit
Taco Toppings
Cilantro, lime, onion, and salsa are all familiar taco toppings. This is a useful first group because the words point directly to food.
Metric Prefixes
Kilo, mega, micro, and pico are metric prefixes. PICO may look like it could belong with food because of pico de gallo, but in this puzzle it completes the prefix set with KILO, MEGA, and MICRO.

#1 Best Overall
Kinds of Skirts
Mini, pencil, poodle, and wrap each describe a skirt style or length: a mini skirt, pencil skirt, poodle skirt, and wrap skirt.
Words with “Hill”
Add “Hill” after each word: Capitol Hill, Faith Hill, foothill, and molehill. The connection crosses a place name, a performer’s name, and two compound words, which makes it less immediately visible than the other sets.

How to approach a similar Connections board
Connections asks players to sort 16 words into four groups of four, with four mistakes allowed, according to a contemporaneous answer guide. For a board like #318, identify a concrete category first, then test the remaining words for plausible alternate meanings before submitting. In particular, check whether an apparent food clue such as PICO has a stronger fit elsewhere.
