Hints for Connections #302
Try these clues before looking at the category names:
- One group describes a very brief amount of time.
- Another contains words for an argument or disagreement.
- One set uses informal or sporting terms for zero.
- For the most indirect group, think of accessories associated with the Planters mascot.
Watch for SPAT: it can mean a quarrel, but in this puzzle it belongs with the accessories. Check that all four words support a category before submitting a guess.

How the groups fit together
BRIEF MOMENT
A flash, heartbeat, jiff, or wink can each suggest a short interval of time.
DISPUTE
Clash, scrap, tangle, and tiff can all describe a quarrel or disagreement.
Rank #2
SLANG FOR ZERO
Jack, love, squat, and zip can each mean zero in informal or context-specific usage.
ACCESSORIES FOR MR. PEANUT
Cane, monocle, spat, and top hat are associated with the Planters mascot. Here, spat means a gaiter or shoe covering rather than a quarrel, making it the board’s key misdirection.

Why #302 means April 8, 2024
Connections puzzle numbers disambiguate dates that recur each year: #302 is the Monday, April 8, 2024 board. April 8, 2026 had a different board, numbered #1032.
The New York Times Help Center describes the game this way: “Players are given 16 words and must find groups of four items that share something in common.” The page also explains that words can seem to fit more than one theme, which is why testing a complete four-word set matters. The daily puzzle releases at midnight in a player’s timezone. Read the NYT Help Center’s Connections rules.
Rank #4
Connections is described by the NYT as free to play without registration or sign-in on its listed platforms. Access to the full historical archive, which goes back to June 12, 2023, is for All Access and Games subscribers. That subscription route applies to playing old boards in the archive; it is not required to read this solution.
