Shamans can get Static Shock either by buying it from a Rune Broker or by completing its discovery in Feralas. For the discovery route, activate the Charged Totem near 60,66, deal nature damage to nearby enemies until a level 44 Whirling Tempest appears, then defeat it and loot the Rune of Static Shock.
Choose a way to get Static Shock
| Route | What to do | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Rune Broker | Look for a Rune Broker in a starting zone or major city and check whether Static Shock is available. | Warcraft Tavern reports that Phase 6 Rune Brokers sell runes for 1 copper; current availability and price are not confirmed by an official Blizzard source. |
| Feralas discovery | Activate the Charged Totem near 60,66, deal nature damage to nearby mobs, then kill the Whirling Tempest. | Requires travel and combat; it is the original discovery route. A guide recommends roughly level 40, but this is not established as a hard requirement. |
If your goal is simply to learn the rune, check a Rune Broker first. If you want to complete the discovery, or the vendor does not offer it, use the Feralas route.
How to find the Charged Totem in Feralas
- Travel to Feralas and head to the southeast ogre area. The Charged Totem is around coordinates 60,66; treat the coordinates and location description as approximate.
- Activate the totem to receive its Charged Air effect. Stay close enough to remain within the totem’s area.
- Deal nature damage to nearby mobs. Warcraft Tavern lists Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning, and Lightning Shield as options. Its suggestions to use Lightning Shield charges or repeated low-rank Lightning Bolt casts are guide tips, not independently verified results.
- Keep dealing nature damage until a level 44 Whirling Tempest appears nearby. The spawn may take an uncertain amount of time.
- Defeat the Whirling Tempest and loot the Rune of Static Shock.
Can you solo the Static Shock discovery?
Yes, according to Warcraft Tavern’s later guide, which reports that an October 2024 hotfix removed the second-player requirement. Wowhead’s older walkthrough still describes a two-player setup, so its group instructions appear outdated on this point. The hotfix account is guide-reported; the sources available here do not include official Blizzard confirmation.
What Static Shock does
Static Shock is a Shaman bracer (wrist) engraving that improves Lightning Shield and can make melee attacks trigger a charge for immediate damage. References disagree on the proc chance: Warcraft Wiki lists 6%, while Wowhead’s Shaman rune overview lists 12%, or 6% while dual-wielding. Check the live in-game tooltip rather than relying on either figure as definitive.
