Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFirst check which edition you play: traditional downloadable mods use Minecraft: Java Edition on PC, while Bedrock Edition uses Add-Ons or Marketplace content. For Java, install a compatible mod loader such as Fabric, put the mod files in the correct folder, and launch that loader’s profile. Bedrock players activate Add-Ons for a world or Realm instead; Java mod files do not follow that process.
Choose the right method for your Minecraft edition
Minecraft’s official comparison describes Java Edition as the choice for community-made mods, while Bedrock offers Marketplace content and Add-Ons. The PC download page likewise describes Java as the option for players who want mods and custom servers. See Minecraft’s Java and Bedrock comparison and its current download page.

- Java Edition on PC: Follow the Java mod instructions below. This walkthrough covers Fabric and the Minecraft Launcher.
- Bedrock Edition: Use Add-Ons, which can add or change content such as blocks, items, mobs, and recipes. Activate them as resource packs or behavior packs for the world or Realm where you want them.
If you use a third-party launcher, its installation process may differ; Fabric directs those users to the launcher’s own documentation. Console, mobile, and Bedrock PC players should not try to install Java `.jar` mods through the Fabric steps.
Install a Java mod with Fabric
These steps are for Minecraft: Java Edition using Fabric through the Minecraft Launcher. Fabric’s installation guide is the source for the folder locations and launcher workflow: Installing Mods.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
- Check the mod’s compatibility. Confirm that it supports Java Edition, Fabric, and the exact Minecraft version you intend to play. A mod made for one Minecraft release may not work with another, so do not assume a mod remains compatible after you update the game.
- Install the dependencies it requires. Many Fabric mods also need Fabric API. Check the mod’s instructions and obtain required files from a source you trust. Fabric’s guide identifies Modrinth or CurseForge as places to find Fabric API, but that is not an endorsement of every download on either service.
- Locate the `mods` folder. Fabric lists these default locations:
- Windows: `%appdata%.minecraftmods`
- macOS: `~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/mods`
- Linux: `~/.minecraft/mods`
- Move the mod `.jar` files into that folder. Use the files as directed by the mod’s author; do not extract a JAR unless that mod’s own instructions specifically require it.
- Launch Fabric. Open Minecraft Launcher, choose the Fabric profile from the profile dropdown, and select Play.
Activate Add-Ons in Bedrock Edition
Bedrock Add-Ons are enabled for a particular world or Realm, not by placing Java mod files in a `mods` folder. Minecraft Help describes the activation paths in its guide to activating Add-Ons in Bedrock Edition.
For a new single-player world
- Select Play and create a new world.
- Open Resource Packs or Behavior Packs.
- On the Available tab, activate the Add-On you want.
- Create the world.
For an existing single-player world
- Select Play, then select the pencil icon beside the world.
- Open Resource Packs or Behavior Packs.
- Activate the Add-On, then select Play.
For a Realm
The Realm owner edits the relevant world slot, opens Resource Packs or Behavior Packs, activates the Add-On, confirms the change, and waits for Minecraft to upload it. Minecraft Help says players joining that Realm from a Bedrock device automatically download and apply its activated Add-Ons.

Access Marketplace content
In Bedrock, open Marketplace and select My Library to find owned content or eligible Marketplace Pass content. Choose the relevant option, such as Download, Create this World, or Equip. Minecraft Help notes that Marketplace Pass content remains accessible only while it stays in the catalog, the subscription remains active, and you use the account that purchased it. Details are in Minecraft’s Marketplace access guide.
Fix common Java mod startup problems
If Minecraft fails to start after you add a mod, check the setup systematically rather than adding more files at once.

- Verify that each mod supports the same Minecraft version and Fabric loader you are launching.
- Check the mod’s instructions for dependencies, including Fabric API where required, and confirm those files are present.
- Make sure the files are in the correct `mods` folder for the Minecraft installation you are using.
- If the problem persists, consult Fabric’s troubleshooting guidance for crash reports and logs through its mod installation documentation.
Back up worlds you care about before changing a mod setup. A backup is a prudent precaution, not a guarantee against every problem.

Java mods are independently developed third-party software. Minecraft Support says mods are not created, reviewed, or endorsed by Mojang Studios and warns that modding can make the game malfunction or unplayable. Its article also states: “As modding is not officially supported, Minecraft Support cannot assist with issues arising from mod usage.” Read Minecraft Help’s guidance on Java Edition mods and use sources you trust.
