Spoilers: The mural is a late-game puzzle, and its crest placements vary by ending path. On a first playthrough, place the Fox Mask Crest in the fan held by the far-left leader fox, the White Sparrow Crest in the lantern held by the upper-middle fox, and the Black Sparrow Crest on the back of the nearby fox reaching toward the white bird.
First-playthrough mural solution
- Find the Fox Mask, White Sparrow, and Black Sparrow crests before returning to the mural.
- Go to the fox-themed mural in the Dark Shrine Treasure Hall.
- Place the Fox Mask Crest in the fan held by the far-left leader fox.
- Place the White Sparrow Crest in the lantern held by the upper-middle fox.
- Place the Black Sparrow Crest on the back of the nearby fox reaching toward the white bird.
Correct placements open the way forward. This first-run layout is cross-checked by GamesRadar+ and GameSpot.
How to read the mural clue
The wall poem to the left of the mural describes a leader Fox and a conflict between the Black and White birds. Use the figures’ actions and the slots they hold to match the clue; do not treat the nine-slot mural as a fixed arrangement that works on every run. The puzzle requires all three crests, and the guide reports that incorrect placements do not provide individual feedback. Read the full clue and account for your ending route before choosing a layout (puzzle mechanics; GameSpot walkthrough context).
New Game+ and later ending placements
The first-playthrough solution does not automatically apply to later runs. The consulted ending reference lists these placements:

These are the later-run configurations listed by Silent Hill Memories, a specialist reference; they are not established as a complete catalog of every possible configuration. Confirm the ending path for your current run before using one. The cited guide says the basic mechanics remain consistent across difficulty levels, although hints may be more abstract; it does not establish every difficulty-and-ending combination.

Konami’s Patch 1.10 notes, dated November 13, 2025, describe an optional skip after solving the mural and completing the “Go through the door” objective in New Game+. The skipped section resumes when Hinako awakens in the Dark Shrine corridor for the second time. Items in the skipped section are not collected, and “Thankful to Be Here,” “Grateful for a Worthy Foe,” and “Clear Skies” do not unlock on a playthrough using the skip. Konami says the skip does not affect branching paths or endings.
