In Minecraft Java 1.17, an ender pearl stasis chamber suspends a thrown pearl in an upward bubble column until you release it. Build a water-filled shaft over soul sand, get the pearl into the column, then use a blocking element such as a trapdoor to make it collide and teleport its thrower.

How the stasis chamber works

This chamber holds a live, thrown ender pearl—not a pearl item. Soul sand beneath water source blocks creates bubbles that push the pearl upward and keep it suspended. When the pearl leaves the column and hits a block, it teleports the player who threw it to the impact location.

What you need

  • Soul sand for the bottom of the bubble column.
  • Water source blocks to fill the shaft above the soul sand.
  • An ender pearl to throw into the column.
  • A trapdoor or another blocking element to release the pearl by making it collide.

Build and use a basic chamber

  1. Make a vertical shaft. Dig or build a shaft with enough room for a vertical water column and for the pearl to enter it. No universal shaft dimensions or exact redstone layout are established for this basic design.
  2. Place soul sand at the bottom. Set it beneath the part of the shaft that will hold the water.
  3. Fill the shaft with water source blocks. The water above the soul sand needs to be source blocks for the upward bubble column to form.
  4. Throw an ender pearl down into the column. Aim so it enters the bubbles rather than hitting the floor or another block. A pearl that collides before it is suspended teleports immediately instead of being stored.
  5. Check that the pearl is suspended. Confirm it remains held in the bubble column before relying on the chamber.
  6. Release it when you want to teleport. Use a trapdoor or another blocking/release mechanism to make the pearl leave stasis and collide. The collision triggers the teleport.

Triggering it with redstone

A redstone trigger can operate a blocking element, such as a trapdoor, to release the pearl. The sources support the mechanism but do not establish a tested, universal redstone layout, block count, or remote-trigger design for Java 1.17. Make sure the trigger actually causes the suspended pearl to collide, and test the arrangement before depending on it.

Java version matters

These instructions are scoped to Java 1.17. Do not assume a compact 1.17 chamber will work identically in later Java versions. In its September 11, 2024 snapshot note for 24w37a, the Java Team stated, “Thrown Ender Pearls now load and tick chunks.” A Mojang issue record says changes introduced in that snapshot affected pearl interactions with bubble columns and disrupted some previously possible compact stasis designs; it lists a fix in 1.21.2 Pre-Release 2. That later behavior is separate from the 1.17 instructions here.
