Sony warns against solvents, other chemicals, chemically treated cloths and liquid contact, and says not to disassemble or modify the controller except as authorized in its manual. Opening it is therefore an optional repair-oriented step—not Sony’s recommended way to clean it.
Choose between exterior cleaning and opening the controller

Clean the outside without opening it
Power down the controller, then wipe its exterior with a soft, dry cloth. Sony’s manual does not recommend wet wipes, sprays, alcohol, household cleaners or other cleaning chemicals; it cautions against solvents and chemicals and says to keep liquids away from the product. Do not improvise a wet-cleaning method around buttons, seams or openings.

Identify your DualSense before opening it
DualSense internals have changed across revisions, and repair steps can differ. Read the model number printed on the controller’s back, above the QR code, and check it against the repair guide you intend to follow. Sony’s support page uses CFI-ZCT1W as an example model number. Its serial and model number guide explains where to find the identifiers; iFixit’s repair index provides model-specific guides. Follow one complete guide that matches your controller rather than combining steps from different versions.

Tools for a repair-oriented teardown
Tools vary by repair. iFixit’s battery replacement guide lists opening picks, a spudger, a Phillips #00 screwdriver and tweezers. Its rear-case guide begins with releasing the middle-trim clips using a plastic opening pick. These are repair-guide tool requirements, not Sony’s prescribed cleaning kit.
Before starting, power the controller down and disconnect it. Then follow the applicable iFixit rear-case guide from beginning to end, using its model-specific sequence. Avoid prying by guesswork or forcing a clip: stop if a step does not match the controller or a part resists, and recheck model compatibility.

Sony’s manual cautions, “Never disassemble or modify the product,” except as authorized in the manual. Self-repair is not risk-free or manufacturer-endorsed routine cleaning, and warranty coverage should not be assumed to remain unaffected. Check the warranty terms for your region before opening the controller. Sony’s US and Canada accessories warranty describes one year of coverage for specified defects in materials or workmanship, subject to its terms; that example does not establish coverage elsewhere.

If a button, trigger, stick or connection is malfunctioning, consult PlayStation support for controller troubleshooting and repair before treating the issue as a cleaning problem. A symptom that needs diagnosis or repair may not be solved by wiping the exterior, and opening the controller adds model-specific steps.
