If you want to solve it yourself first, use the hints below in order and stop before the reveal.
Hints for Wordle #1285
- The answer has five letters, with no repeated letters.
- It contains two vowels and three consonants. Its pattern is consonant-consonant-vowel-consonant-vowel.
- Its vowels are A and E. The word begins with S and ends with E.
How to narrow down the answer
Wordle feedback shows whether a guessed letter is correct and whether it is in the right position. The New York Times Help Center describes green as the right letter in the right spot, yellow as the right letter in the wrong spot, and gray as a letter that is not in the answer; that explanation appears in its instructions for Wordle-style Bonus Puzzles.
Once you know the first letter is S and the last is E, test likely letters for the middle positions while tracking which letters your guesses confirm or rule out. The answer has A and R among those remaining letters, with H also appearing in the word.
SOARE, SLATE, and CRANE are examples of opening guesses suggested by an answer guide because they probe several relevant letters. They are illustrative options, not a measured ranking of the best starting words.
