To solve today’s NYT Strands without giving away the whole board, start with the theme clue, look for a spangram that names the theme, then trace connected words through the grid. If you get stuck, three valid non-theme words earn an in-game hint that marks a theme word’s location.
The October 8, 2026 answers have not been verified here, so this guide focuses on a repeatable solving method rather than risking a mismatched daily solution.
How NYT Strands works
Strands uses a 6-by-8 letter grid. Find theme words by connecting neighboring cells; you can move horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, and a path can turn. You cannot reuse a cell within the same word. There is no word bank: the theme clue is your main guide. An academic paper on New York Times games describes the relationship this way: “Each word in the solution is related to the theme of the day, hinted at in the box on the left.” (FUN 2026 proceedings.)
One answer is the spangram: a word or phrase that captures the theme and stretches between two opposite sides of the board. The other answers fit the same theme. Once solved, the theme words and spangram account for the board’s cells.

A step-by-step way to solve the puzzle
1. Work the clue before searching randomly
Read the clue literally, then consider other likely meanings. It might point to a category, a familiar phrase, wordplay, or a specific set of things. Make a short mental list of possible theme labels rather than committing to the first interpretation.
2. Look for a possible spangram
Think of a word or phrase that could name the category you have in mind. Scan the border for a connected path that could run between opposite sides of the board. The spangram can make an ambiguous clue easier to interpret, so it is often a useful early target—but it is a tactic, not a guaranteed fastest route.
3. Trace likely theme words
Search for words that belong with the clue and connect their letters one cell at a time. Try diagonal moves and bends as well as straight lines. If a promising word cannot be traced without reusing a cell, discard it or look for a different route.
4. Let used cells narrow the search
After finding a word, treat its occupied cells as unavailable for the other words. Reconsider the remaining letters in light of the theme and the answers already found. A candidate word should fit both the topic and a valid connected path.
5. Use an in-game hint if you need one
If you are stuck, find three valid words that are not theme answers to earn a hint. According to the independent guide Strands.Game, the hint highlights one theme word on the grid (Strands.Game; the site says it is not affiliated with the New York Times). This offers a way to get help while still leaving you to trace the answer yourself.
Choose how much help you want
| Approach | What it reveals | Best when |
|---|---|---|
| Solve unaided | No extra information beyond the puzzle’s clue and grid. | You want to preserve the full discovery process. |
| Use the built-in hint | A highlighted location for one theme word, according to Strands.Game. | You want a nudge but still want to trace and identify the word. |
| Consult an external hint or answer page | Depending on the guide, staged hints may reveal more gradually, while an answer page can disclose the solution. | You are comfortable with spoilers or want to check a specific answer. Strands Today’s independent beginner guide describes staged external help: How to Play NYT Strands. |
Why this page does not give an October 8 answer
A daily answer belongs to a specific puzzle date. TechRadar’s report for October 7, 2026, game #948, gives the theme “Color for the cure,” the answers BUBBLEGUM, BARBIE, SHOCKING, QUARTZ, and FLAMINGO, and the spangram TICKLEDPINK (TechRadar, October 7, 2026). That is an example of how the theme and spangram can connect; it is not evidence of the October 8 puzzle’s solution. The October 8 theme and answers were not verified, so using those October 7 words as today’s answer would risk spoiling the wrong board.
