Operator is a drone-focused survivor in Risk of Rain 2. A reliable starting loop is to use the H3-11 OCR Custom for steady fire or charged precision shots, command the currently active drone with ADMIN-OVERRIDE, and use Ascent Protocol and Ejection Core to reposition or create openings. Operator is included in the purchasable Alloyed Collective expansion and is unlocked by default within the DLC, according to 2K’s release notes.
How Operator’s core mechanics work
Operator’s kit combines a chargeable pistol with a changing set of drone abilities. Rather than treating drones as passive support, check which drone is active and use Operator’s abilities to direct its distinct action. The official Operator developer diary describes the launch kit; current in-game descriptions are the best reference if a mechanic differs on your build.

H3-11 OCR Custom: choose between speed and charge
The H3-11 OCR Custom can fire continuously and builds up to three charge stacks. Each stack increases damage; the fully charged shot is described as highly accurate and having no damage fall-off. Kill shots can ricochet to the nearby enemy with the lowest health for 75% of the bullet’s damage, according to the Risk of Rain Team’s 2025 developer diary.
Keep firing when enemies are close, numerous, or pressing you and waiting to charge would cost too much time. Charge when you have a safe firing window, a high-priority target, or a long sight line. Ricochets can carry damage to nearby low-health enemies after a kill.

ADMIN-OVERRIDE: use the active drone’s ability
ADMIN-OVERRIDE commands the currently active drone to use its own ability against a target. Operator’s passive Drone Queue cycles through available drones after Operator uses drone abilities, including drones acquired during the run. Because the active option can change, check the queue before committing the command.
The developer diary illustrates how varied those actions can be: a Healing Drone heals Operator and grants a temporary speed boost; a Bombardment Drone can dash to a target, fire chain lightning, and follow with area damage; and the TC-280 Prototype can make a strafing attack. Treat the active drone as a situational tool rather than assuming every command produces the same kind of damage or utility.

A practical Operator combat loop
- Read the situation. Identify whether you need quick sustained fire, a charged shot, a drone effect, or a way to change position.
- Use the pistol at the right pace. Keep firing through immediate pressure; charge for a more deliberate shot when you can safely wait.
- Check the Drone Queue. Confirm which drone is active, then use ADMIN-OVERRIDE when its ability suits the target or your need.
- Reposition or disrupt. Use Ascent Protocol to move while remaining able to use other abilities, or Ejection Core to launch and debuff enemies before following up.
- Reassess the queue and threats. Drone abilities cycle the queue, so check the active drone again before the next command.
Use Ascent Protocol to reposition without stopping your offense
Ascent Protocol commands a drone to lift Operator into the air, while allowing continued use of other abilities during the descent. The developer diary also describes aiming at a spare drone and reactivating the ability after a brief cooldown to leap toward it and extend flight.
Use the lift to escape immediate pressure, reach a different firing position, or keep attacking from the air. It is a movement option, not a guaranteed safe route: terrain, enemy pressure, and the current build all affect whether a jump helps.

Use Ejection Core to disrupt enemies and create a damage window
Ejection Core overcharges and throws a drone at a group of enemies. On impact, it launches enemies and stuns them while airborne, applies Bugged, increases damage taken by Bugged enemies, and slows their descent, according to the official developer diary.
Against a group or dangerous target, use the disruption to make room for follow-up pistol fire and drone attacks. The ability’s crowd control and damage amplification are useful reasons to spend it; the official description does not establish a single universally optimal combo.
How to decide what to use next
| Situation | Consider | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Several close threats or little time to aim | Continuous H3-11 fire | You avoid spending time charging while under pressure. |
| A safe firing window or a priority target at range | Build charge stacks | Charge increases damage, and the full charge is described as highly accurate with no damage fall-off. |
| A useful drone ability is available | ADMIN-OVERRIDE | The effect depends on the active drone, so choose based on its utility. |
| You need to escape or change position | Ascent Protocol | It lifts Operator and allows other abilities during descent. |
| A group or dangerous enemy needs disruption | Ejection Core | Its launch, stun, Bugged effect, and slower descent can create a follow-up opportunity. |
These are decision aids based on the described abilities, not a tested ranking. The official material does not establish a statistically validated best build, best drone selection, or universal item combination.

Operator is one of the survivors in the purchasable Alloyed Collective expansion. 2K’s November 18, 2025 release notes say Operator is unlocked by default within the DLC, so the listed access condition is owning and playing the expansion on a compatible version—not completing an Operator-specific challenge.

2K’s December 9, 2025 patch-notes page was updated July 8, 2026. It records later Operator-related fixes involving CMD-SWARM interface text, ADMIN-OVERRIDE interactions, queued drone interactions, and items that had failed after a stage transition. Those fixes do not establish that all platforms behave identically or that no other issues remain; check the current in-game ability descriptions and platform-specific notes if you see different behavior.
