For an original Wii, the standard controller is a Wii Remote: pair it by pressing SYNC on the console and then on the Remote. A Classic Controller attaches to the bottom of a Wii Remote, while a GameCube controller plugs into the console only on Wii model RVL-001. The game must support the controller you choose.
How to sync a Wii Remote to the Wii
- Install batteries in the Wii Remote.
- Open the SD Card slot cover on the front of the Wii and briefly press and release the SYNC button inside.
- Briefly press and release the SYNC button in the Wii Remote’s battery compartment. On some Wii Remote Plus models, the button may be accessible without removing the battery cover.
- Wait for the player LEDs on the Remote to stop blinking. The lit LED shows the assigned player number.
Nintendo’s Wii operations manual explains that the LEDs blink during synchronization and that the connection is complete once they stop. The order in which Remotes are synchronized determines player order in multiplayer games.
Standard Mode and One-Time Mode
The manual distinguishes Standard Mode, which remains stored unless the Remote is synchronized with another console, from One-Time Mode, which is temporary. A Wii can have up to 10 Remotes in Standard Mode and 6 in One-Time Mode, for up to 16 Wii Remote or Wii Remote Plus controllers total, according to Nintendo’s 2012 manual. Only a Remote synchronized in Standard Mode can turn the Wii on or off.
How to connect a Classic Controller
- Thread the Wii Remote wrist-strap cord through the connector hook on the Classic Controller.
- Plug the Classic Controller’s cable into the External Extension Connector on the bottom of the Wii Remote.
- Set the Remote down if you prefer, then use the Classic Controller with a game that supports it.
The Classic Controller and Classic Controller Pro are attachments; they do not plug directly into the Wii console. Compatibility depends on the game. Can you use a GameCube controller on a Wii?
Yes, but only with a Wii model RVL-001, which has GameCube controller sockets. Plug the controller into a socket on the console; the socket nearest the front is Player One. Nintendo says GameCube controllers generally work for GameCube games, and some Wii games and downloadable titles also support them. They are not a universal replacement for a Wii Remote.
Check the model number before connecting one: Nintendo Support states that only Wii consoles with model number RVL-001 are compatible with GameCube accessories. Nintendo’s Wii accessory compatibility guidance also notes that support depends on the software.

If a Remote does not pair, repeat the SYNC sequence and wait for its LEDs to stop blinking before trying to use it. If a traditional controller is not recognized, check the game’s manual or packaging rather than assuming that every Wii title supports the same accessories.
