For My Winter Car, start with the My Winter Car port of MSCLoader: the dedicated MWCLoader project says it will receive no further updates and directs players to that port. Before installing anything, check that the mod explicitly supports My Winter Car and names the loader it needs. A My Summer Car mod does not become compatible by ignoring a loader warning.
Choose a loader that matches the mod
Loader choice determines where files go and how the game loads them. The MSCLoader page documents a My Winter Car port, while the MWCLoader page marks its loader as discontinued. A separate community tutorial describes BepInEx, and the Vortex extension lists several loader ecosystems. These are distinct approaches, not interchangeable folders.
- MSCLoader: Use the My Winter Car MSCLoader port when the mod requires it. The MSCLoader page provides its installer instructions and warns that bypassing a compatibility error does not make My Summer Car mods work in My Winter Car.
- MWCLoader: Treat this as a legacy option. Its page says it will receive no more updates and points users to MSCLoader.
- BepInEx or another ecosystem: Install one only when the mod calls for it and follow that loader’s current instructions. A Steam Community tutorial describes a BepInEx x64 setup, but it is an individual community guide dated January 2, 2026, not official game documentation.
Check each mod page for the supported game, loader, dependencies, installation folder, controls, and known issues. Do not infer compatibility from the mod’s name or from a loader’s support for another game.
Install a mod with MSCLoader
- Download the latest MSCLoader release from its My Winter Car page. Unpack the installer somewhere outside the game folder.
- Run
MSCLInstaller.exe. If the installer does not detect the game, select the My Winter Car installation directory yourself. - Choose Install MSCLoader, select a Mods folder (the game folder is recommended by the installer page), and wait for installation to finish.
- Unpack the mod files into the Mods folder you selected. Follow the mod’s own page if it specifies a different structure or additional dependencies.
- Launch My Winter Car and check whether the mod’s documented effect or controls are available.
With Vortex, the My Winter Car extension says that MSCLoader’s installer still needs to be run after a mod download. Follow the Vortex prompts and verify that the mod lands in the folder its page specifies.

Install MWCLoader only for a mod that requires it
The steps below describe the legacy MWCLoader setup documented on its page; they are not the current default recommendation.
- Download the ZIP from MWCLoader’s Files tab and extract it into the My Winter Car game directory containing
mywintercar.exe. - Confirm
winhttp.dlland theMWCLoaderfolder are beside the executable. - Launch the game. At the main menu, select MODS under Credits to toggle mods; select CONFIGURE to change settings or keybinds supported by a mod.
- Place each mod as directed by its page. MWCLoader’s documented example is
My Winter Car/Mods/ModName/ModName.dll.
Understand Vortex folders and loader differences
The My Winter Car Vortex extension documents separate destinations by loader. Use the destination for the mod’s named ecosystem rather than treating every DLL as if it belonged in one Mods folder.

The extension says Steam installations are discovered automatically; other versions may need a manually selected game location. Its instructions also say to choose only one loader. The documented exception is an advanced community bridge for running BepInEx and MelonLoader together: it calls for BepInEx 5 x64 and the bridge, with MelonLoader mods in MLLoader/Mods, MelonLoader plugins in MLLoader/Plugins, and BepInEx mods in BepInEx/plugins. Beginners should not combine loaders unless they specifically need both ecosystems and can follow that bridge’s instructions.
Check that mods load and protect your save
- Install one mod, launch the game, and check its documented effect before adding another. A third-party My Winter Car FAQ recommends this approach and warns that game updates can break mods.
- Back up your saves before modding. The same FAQ reports corruption risks, particularly with save editors, gameplay-altering mods, and conflicting or poorly coded mods; this is community guidance, not a developer guarantee about what will happen to a particular save.
- Confirm the loader label and exact folder in the mod’s instructions. A file placed in the wrong loader’s directory may not load even if the file itself is present.
- If using Vortex with MSCLoader, complete the installer step after downloading the mod, then check the selected Mods folder.
- If a mod fails, first verify that it supports My Winter Car, matches the installed loader, has its dependencies, and is in the required directory. For MSCLoader problems, its page asks users to include logs and distinguish loader issues from mod-specific problems when reporting them.
Linux and Steam Deck caveat
A Steam Community post discusses Proton launch options, but the available reports are anecdotal and do not establish one current procedure that works for every Linux or Steam Deck setup. Check the mod and loader pages for applicable guidance rather than assuming the Windows installation steps translate directly.
