There is no single installation method for every Borderlands 4 mod on PC. Check the mod’s file type and dependencies first, then use the Borderlands 4 Vortex extension for supported formats or follow the mod author’s current manual instructions. In particular, don’t assume older guides that use a ~mods folder are still valid: the extension says patch 1.0.3 disabled loading from that folder.
Before you install a mod
Confirm you are using the PC version
The folder instructions here are for PC. The cited documentation does not establish a console mod-installation process, so do not apply these steps to console versions. For Steam and Epic installs, the Borderlands 4 Vortex extension says it can locate the game automatically. If you need to select a folder manually, use the game’s install location—the folder containing Borderlands4.exe.
Check the mod’s requirements and format
On the individual mod page, check its file type, required framework or dependencies, supported game version, installation destination, update notes, and removal instructions. Mods may use formats such as UE5 pak files, PythonSDK, or UE4SS, and their requirements and folder layouts differ. A manager can place files, but it is not necessarily the loader or framework that makes the mod run; Nexus Mods explains this distinction in its Vortex documentation.
Install supported mods with Vortex

Keep the Vortex staging folder and the game on the same drive. The extension says Borderlands 4 does not support the symlinks needed when those folders are on different drives.

Install the mod through Vortex if its format is supported, and check the mod page for any separate framework or setup steps. According to the extension, common destinations include
OakGame/Content/Paksfor UE5.pak,.ucas, and.utocfiles;sdk_modsfor PythonSDK mods such as.sdkmodand.py; and the game root for PythonSDK files. Other supported types use their own destinations.
Those destinations describe the extension’s handling of supported files, not a universal manual-install recipe. Its notes say direct installation into Paks has no load-order support and describe distinct routing for UE4SS and logic mods. Preserve the structure in the mod’s package and follow its instructions rather than moving files into a guessed folder. Install a mod manually when its author requires it
Manual installation is appropriate when the mod page gives specific folder instructions or the mod is not supported by the extension. Read those instructions closely: two mods that appear to be similar file types may still rely on different frameworks or folder layouts. The extension reports that patch 1.0.3 disabled loading from ~mods; avoid older generic directions that tell you to use that folder without confirming they apply to your mod and current setup.

Some tools and mods require an SDK rather than a simple pak-file placement. For the documented BL4 Live example, the Save Editor instructions call for downloading oak2-sdk.zip from the Oak2 SDK release, extracting its contents into the game root, and placing the mod’s bl4_live directory directly inside sdk_mods. The __init__.py file should be at that folder level.

Extract the SDK contents into the game root, the folder containing
Borderlands4.exe. -
Place the BL4 Live mod’s

Launch the game and load a character fully before connecting the Save Editor.

Ultra+ recommends Ultra+ Manager for installing, updating, and configuring its mods. Its manual alternative is to extract the main archive into the Borderlands 4 directory. The mod page says updates are more frequent through the manager and Discord. It also documents a technical limitation affecting UE4SS functionality, which limits mod settings; check the page for the current details before choosing how to install it. Launch the game and check for the mod’s expected effect.

If it works, install the next mod and repeat. This makes it easier to identify which install or dependency needs attention if something goes wrong.

If a mod stops working after a game update, check the mod page and the relevant framework or extension for updated compatibility instructions before changing folders or reinstalling the game.
Borderlands Support’s cited third-party-tools page is general troubleshooting guidance, not a universal mod-installation recipe; its visible steps concern reinstalling Steam or Epic and the game. Use the specific mod and framework documentation for installation details: Borderlands Support.
