Xbox Game Pass Core was Microsoft’s 2023 replacement for Xbox Live Gold, bundling online multiplayer on console with a selected game catalog and member deals. Xbox’s current entry-level plan materials use the name Game Pass Essential. Core’s launch price and catalog count are historical, not reliable guides to today’s local offer.
What was Xbox Game Pass Core?
Microsoft introduced Game Pass Core in July 2023 as “the evolution of Xbox Live Gold.” It was designed chiefly for console players who wanted to play multiplayer games online with friends, while also adding a selection of games and member discounts. Xbox’s 2024 guide described a catalog of more than 25 games and deals of up to 50% off select titles; those were descriptions of Core at that time, not promises about the current Essential plan. Xbox’s 2023 announcement and Xbox’s 2024 Core guide explain the historical offer.
How much did Game Pass Core cost?
At its July 2023 US launch, Xbox announced Core at $9.99 per month or $59.99 per year. These are launch prices, not verified current prices for Essential or any other market. Check the plan page for your country and the billing terms shown at checkout before subscribing; Xbox says subscriptions recur until canceled and advises canceling before the next billing date if you do not want another charge. See Xbox’s current plan comparison.
What is the difference between Game Pass Core and Essential?
Core is the historical name; Essential is the name used for the current entry-level tier on Xbox’s plan comparison page. The sources establish that these are distinct dated plan references, but do not establish the exact date or mechanics of a Core-to-Essential transition. Avoid treating old Core prices, catalog counts, or benefits as current Essential terms.

Xbox currently describes Essential as including online console multiplayer, in-game benefits, Rewards, and deals and discounts on selected games and add-ons. Titles, game counts, features, and availability can vary by time, region, plan, and platform. For a useful comparison with broader tiers, check the current local recurring price and billing period alongside the games and platforms included, catalog turnover, discounts, cloud access, and cancellation terms.
Does Game Pass Core include online multiplayer?
Core included online console multiplayer. Xbox lists online console multiplayer as an Essential benefit today, but a subscription is not required to play free-to-play games online: Xbox says online multiplayer for that category is available to every Xbox player. If your multiplayer games are free-to-play, that benefit alone may not justify paying for a subscription. Check Xbox’s current plan details.

Is Game Pass Core worth it?
It was most relevant to console players who needed multiplayer access for paid games and would also use the included catalog or member offers. Its value depended on the player’s actual games and play habits, not simply the number of titles listed. If you mainly play free-to-play multiplayer games, the subscription’s online-play benefit is unnecessary for those games. If you are deciding about Essential now, compare its current local price and included games with what you would otherwise buy or play; the 2023 Core launch offer is not a current value calculation.

As of October 8, 2026, Xbox had announced that Essential would include five cloud gaming hours per month beginning in November 2026. The limit was announced as upcoming, not yet active on that date. Xbox also estimated that the change would affect 4% of Game Pass subscribers. The announcement said additional cloud time could be purchased through the Xbox Store, while pricing and availability details were still to come. Read Xbox’s September 2026 announcement.

Cloud gaming requirements
Xbox’s December 2025 setup guide recommends an internet connection of at least 20 Mbps for stable cloud gaming. That is a recommendation, not a guarantee of quality on every connection. Most games require a gamepad. Xbox lists compatible consoles, computers, mobile devices, TVs, handhelds, and VR headsets, but supported devices, countries, and games vary. Check the live plan and device information before relying on a particular setup. See Xbox Cloud Gaming.
A compatible controller is an optional accessory if you want to play on a phone, tablet, or TV and do not already have a suitable gamepad. Xbox lists its controllers among compatible options, but device compatibility varies and devices may be sold separately. Xbox’s plan page lists supported cloud devices.
