Digital Extremes, the London, Ontario studio behind Warframe, turned a free-to-play multiplayer shooter into a long-running game with a worldwide audience—and made its hometown the gathering place for that community. A July 24, 2024 MobileSyrup feature by Bradly Shankar traced that story through TennoCon 2024, player dialogue and the developers’ unusually visible relationship with fans.

What is Digital Extremes, and what is TennoCon?

Digital Extremes is a game studio based in London, Ontario. Its central game is Warframe, a free-to-play third-person multiplayer shooter that has been running since 2013. TennoCon is the convention built around that game and its community.

The July 2024 feature described TennoCon as more than a showcase: it is a chance for players, developers and performers connected to Warframe to meet in person. That single-game focus distinguishes it from broad gaming trade shows such as PAX, Gamescom and Tokyo Game Show, which represent many games and publishers. The difference is one of emphasis, not a measured ranking: TennoCon concentrates its panels, announcements and social events on one franchise and the people who follow it.

How did TennoCon bring a global audience to London?

For the 2024 event, MobileSyrup reported that TennoCon sold out within a few days and drew around 3,000 fans to RBC Place in London. An adjacent 13,400-square-foot tent expanded the event space. The report said attendees travelled from the United States, Europe, Singapore, Australia and elsewhere to join a convention organized by a London-based team of about 300.

That local setting is part of the appeal. Megan Everett, Warframe’s director of community and live operations, said the convention centre’s proximity to the studio made participation practical for staff and their families. She also described TennoCon as a way to give back to London: visitors spend money locally and may discover restaurants, bars and libraries they will recommend to others.

These figures describe TennoCon 2024 as reported in July of that year; they do not establish current attendance, ticket availability or event plans.

Why has Warframe lasted?

The July 2024 feature reported more than 80 million registered players for Warframe and about 54,000 Steam players at the time of publication. Those are figures reported by MobileSyrup, not independently verified counts, and the Steam number is a historical snapshot rather than a live measure of the audience.

Everett connected the game’s longevity to an ongoing conversation with players. She said Digital Extremes made transparency and direct communication a priority from the beginning, asking players what they wanted and trying to respond. That approach can help a long-running live game adapt, but the article also points to a creative decision that went beyond routine updates.

A narrative risk that changed expectations

Everett cited The Second Dream, a 2015 expansion, as a risk that showed players wanted a stronger narrative. The example suggests a studio willing to change what the game emphasized rather than simply preserve its original formula. In the feature’s account, continued development, player dialogue and that willingness to take storytelling risks all help explain Warframe’s staying power.

What makes the Warframe community unusually visible?

At TennoCon 2024, fans cheered Digital Extremes staff during the TennoLive presentation, then met developers informally and queued for signings. The event also added a TennoVIP evening. The format puts the people making the game in front of the people playing it, making community contact part of the convention rather than a background feature.

That welcome extended to the performers, too. Ben Starr, who played Arthur in Warframe: 1999, spoke about the warmth of the fan community and the studio’s effort to make performers feel valued. MobileSyrup also reported that more than 700,000 iOS downloads had been announced at TennoCon 2024; this is a historical figure from the event, not a current download total.

What the 2024 story does—and does not—say about the studio today

The feature described Digital Extremes as owned by Tencent since 2020 and operating primarily from London alongside remote workers. It also discussed Warframe: 1999 in the context of the 2024 event. These details reflect the article’s July 2024 reporting; it does not establish current release status, platform availability, player counts or TennoCon schedules.

The central point is less about a single attendance or player metric than the connection between a studio, its game and its home city. Digital Extremes built a global audience around Warframe, then made London a place where that audience could meet the developers and one another.
