The soul goes into an available gem when the target dies.
How to fill a soul gem
- Carry an empty soul gem. Bethesda says soul gems can be looted from monsters or found in containers such as crates and barrels, and certain vendors sell them. See Bethesda’s soul-gem guide.
- Select and cast Soul Trap on an enemy. Apply the spell before the target dies; a target killed before the spell lands cannot be captured.
- Defeat the enemy while the effect is active. The soul transfers to an available soul gem when the target dies. Check the spell entry in your own menu for its duration rather than relying on a guessed timer.
Default controls for casting Soul Trap
On PC, Bethesda lists C or Mouse 4 as the default Cast Spell binding. On Xbox, the default is RB. These are defaults and may differ if you changed your bindings. The cited control pages do not establish defaults for other platforms.
Why Soul Trap may not fill a gem
- No empty gem: Check your inventory for an unused soul gem before casting.
- The target died too late: The enemy must die while Soul Trap remains active. Check the spell’s displayed duration and recast if needed.
- The target’s soul may exceed a gem’s capacity: A GameSpot guide for the original Oblivion says a soul goes into the smallest available gem able to contain it. That detailed selection rule is not confirmed here for Remastered, so do not assume every gem can hold every target.
What filled soul gems are for
Filled soul gems are used for enchanting and recharging enchanted weapons. The original Oblivion PC manual says a gem must be large enough for the enchantment being created and that depleted enchanted weapons and staves need recharging; those details are background from the original game, not confirmation of Remastered-specific changes. The manual is available at the original PC manual.
Azura’s Star and gem reuse
GameSpot’s guide to the original Oblivion describes Azura’s Star as reusable and ordinary soul gems as consumed when used. The cited guide does not establish whether Remastered changed those rules, so treat them as original-game guidance rather than verified Remastered behavior. See GameSpot’s Oblivion guide.
