To unlock Enigma Protocol, progress the Echoes questline until Failsafe gives you the Encoded Log, then travel to the Well of Echoes on Nessus and defeat Argus. For the full activity clear, focus on objectives and security nodes rather than every enemy—and after defeating the final boss, take the portal and finish the escape route to reach the last chest.
How to unlock Enigma Protocol
- Get the Encoded Log. Progress Episode: Echoes and collect the Encoded Log quest from Failsafe in the H.E.L.M.
- Travel to the Well of Echoes. Head to the Tangle on Nessus; Artifact’s Edge is a nearby fast-travel point. In the southwest of the Tangle, enter the cylindrical tower with a triangular doorway, follow the corridor, and pass through the Vex portal.
- Lower Argus’s shield. Follow the path into the large circular room. Argus, Firewall Guardian, is protected by a shield. Destroy the four Vex cubes around the room to bring the shield down, then defeat the Minotaur. The cubes are above Argus, near a ground-level portal, and on upper ledges.
- Start the activity. Follow the waypoint into the chasm to reach A Hole in the Well, then interact with the activity flag. Complete this initial run; Enigma Protocol will then be available as a node in the H.E.L.M.
How to complete Enigma Protocol
Enigma Protocol is a timed run through the Vex Network, combining traversal, portals, objective rooms, and Sparrow sections. Treat it as an objective race, not a full enemy-clear activity: when it is safe, move past ordinary enemies and do the task that opens the next portal. Shoot yellow security nodes to extend the countdown, and kill an Archival Timekeeper quickly if one appears.

Shielded Harpies
Defeat the Goblins in the three groups and pick up the orange balls they drop. Throw the balls at the shielded Harpies to break through the encounter. Clear any security nodes and kill the Archival Timekeeper if it spawns.
Sparrow bridge
Shoot the diamond ahead to form the track, then summon your Sparrow and follow the route. Ride over the white track sections for speed boosts. Keep an eye out for security nodes along the track and on nearby platforms.

Encrypted data
Shoot the pink bulbs on the central structure, then collect the pink data motes they drop. Keep repeating this until the objective is complete.
Final boss
Fight Ainigmatos, the Indecipherable Proto-Mind, while staying mobile around the arena. Shield and Super pickups are available if you need them, but they do not respawn, so use them when they will help. These room mechanics come from a June 2024 guide; follow the current in-game objective if an update has changed an encounter.

Solo or fireteam?
A three-player fireteam is the expected format, but a guide reports that solo completion is possible. Teammates reduce combat pressure and make it easier to handle the timer, objectives, and traversal at the same time. If you go solo, prioritize the objective and time extensions over optional fights.
First chest: reboot or continue?
The first Archival Grid chest is a decision point. You can take the chest and reboot the activity, or continue through the portal toward the boss and final chest. GameSpot reports that all three players must vote to reboot, so a fireteam needs everyone’s agreement. Rebooting suits a group that wants another run from the first-chest point; continuing is the route to the full clear.

How to reach the final reward chest
After defeating Ainigmatos, go through the portal immediately and complete the final Sparrow traversal. The countdown is still active after the boss dies, and the ending chest is at the end of the escape route. Leaving after the boss fight means stopping short of the full completion and its final reward.

Bungie describes Episode activities broadly as offering seasonal engrams, powerful weapons and armor, and Radiolite samples. Its Echoes overview also describes permanent upgrades from researching collected specimens in the H.E.L.M. Research Bay. The specific Enigma Protocol drops reported by guides may no longer match the live loot table, so check the activity’s in-game reward listing before you run it for a particular item.
