How violent are recent Call of Duty games?
The ESRB summaries describe violence as visible and often graphic, rather than limited to implied combat. They cite realistic shooting and explosions, blood effects, and attacks at close range. The amount and type of gore differ among titles and modes.
| Game | ESRB rating and descriptors | Violence described by the ESRB |
|---|---|---|
| Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 | M for Mature 17+; Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Strong Language, Suggestive Themes, and Use of Drugs. | Realistic gunfire, cries of pain, blood splatter, close-up stabbing and pistol-whipping, and a sequence involving an eye being gouged. Some weapons cause characters to explode into bloody chunks; zombie and hallucination sequences depict decapitation and dismemberment. |
| Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 | M for Mature 17+; Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Strong Language, Suggestive Themes, and Use of Drugs. | Realistic, frenetic combat; execution moves involving repeated stabbing; bloody explosions; and frequent dismemberment and decapitation in zombie and hallucination sequences. |
| Call of Duty: Warzone | M for Mature 17+. | Realistic gunfire, explosions, cries of pain, blood splatter, and multiplayer finishing moves involving stabbing or shooting at close range. Some modes feature zombie skins with wounds or rotting flesh, bloodstained environments, and sometimes mutilated corpses. |

What does the ESRB M rating mean?
ESRB’s M for Mature category means a game may be suitable for people aged 17 and older. The rating is a guide, not a prediction of how a particular child will react. The ESRB’s ratings guide explains the rating categories and content descriptors; the individual game summaries give examples of what prompted a rating.

Is Call of Duty too violent for kids?
That depends on the child and the specific game, but the recent entries covered here are rated for mature audiences and include graphic depictions of violence. To make an informed decision, look beyond the franchise name and compare the exact title’s summary with what you are comfortable with a child seeing.
- Check how realistic and visible the blood and gore are.
- Look for close-range attacks or execution moves.
- Note whether the summary mentions dismemberment or decapitation, and whether it applies to particular sequences or modes.
- Review other descriptors too, including Strong Language, Suggestive Themes, and Use of Drugs where listed.
- Consider online interaction features as well as the violence rating.
Can you turn off gore in Call of Duty?
The ESRB summaries cited here do not establish that graphic effects can be disabled across current Call of Duty games. Do not assume there is one gore-off option that applies to every title. Check the settings and support information for the specific game and platform if you are looking for an effect or content control.
