Directed Mode guides you through a Zombies map’s Main Quest with on-screen objectives and staged round caps. When you hit a cap, zombies keep spawning; after you clear them, the same round repeats until you complete the current objective. The mode makes the story quest easier to follow and slows round escalation, but it disables optional activities such as side quests.
What Directed Mode does
Directed Mode is a guided route through a map’s Main Quest—the primary story quest. The game lists objectives on screen and provides step-by-step assistance, so you spend less time figuring out what to do next. Call of Duty described the feature as offering “direct assistance in completing the Main Quest, with objectives listed on-screen” in its August 28, 2024 Call of Duty: NEXT Zombies announcement.

It does not remove the horde or pause the match. Zombies continue to spawn, but progression is staged around quest milestones: when you reach the current round cap, the round repeats after its zombies are eliminated until you finish the active objective. The cap then advances with quest progress. This gives you more room to complete tasks and prepare before the rounds become harder.

The comparison describes the modes’ documented structure; it does not establish current reward eligibility for every map. Treyarch’s August 8, 2024 Zombies overview said Main Quest completions would earn map-themed rewards, with an extra reward for completing the quest the traditional way. That announcement also described a limited-time Calling Card for completing a Main Quest before Directed Mode launched on its map; it was a launch-period incentive, not confirmation of a reward still available now.

What is disabled
Directed Mode is for the Main Quest, not a guided version of all Zombies activities. Official descriptions say Side Quests and Easter Eggs are unavailable. The Call of Duty: NEXT announcement also names Trials and the Rampage Inducer; the Season 1 announcement specifically calls out S.A.M. Trials. The descriptions differ in which categories they name, so do not assume every optional activity is listed in every announcement.

The Season 1 announcement introduced Directed Mode for Liberty Falls and Terminus. The Shattered Veil map guide explains that caps rise at quest milestones and stop at Round 15 until the quest is complete; the Season 3 Reloaded announcement also introduced the mode for that map.

The official materials cited here explain how the mode works but do not establish a current, version-specific menu path, so the precise label or location may vary. You need Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 to play; Activision’s official product page identifies Zombies as a game mode.

It is a good fit if you want help following the Main Quest, are learning a map, or prefer more time to complete quest steps before round pressure increases. Choose Standard play if you want to discover the quest yourself or pursue optional activities that Directed Mode disables.
