Equip a torch in the inventory’s Other Weapons section, then press R on the default PC keyboard controls or hold down on the controller D-pad to draw it. Use the same input to put it away.
How to equip and draw a torch
- Obtain a torch in the game. You may find or buy one; merchant stock can vary by location.
- Open your inventory and equip the torch in Other Weapons.
- Return to the game world and use the control for your platform: press R on the reported default PC mapping, or hold down on the D-pad on a controller.
- Repeat the same input to stow the torch.
The torch must be equipped before the draw control will work. If the input does nothing, check the inventory slot and the current control settings; customized mappings or later game builds may differ from the reported defaults. PC Gamer’s guide and GameSpot’s guide describe these inputs.
When to carry it—and when to put it away
Walking through a settlement at night
Carry the torch while traveling openly through settlements after dark. Guides describe nighttime torch use as expected by guards. GameSpot and PC Gamer both cover its nighttime use.
Sneaking or stealing
Stow the torch before approaching stealthily: its light makes Henry easier to see, which works against staying hidden.

What changes when the torch is in your off-hand?
The torch occupies the off-hand. It can be used alongside some one-handed weapons, but it conflicts with a shield or a standard two-handed weapon setup. PC Gamer describes a perk-related longsword exception; check the current in-game equipment behavior before relying on it. PC Gamer and GameSpot outline the equipment trade-off.
