Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo manually add mods, install a compatible mod loader on your Minecraft Java Edition server, stop the server, back up its world and configuration, and place the mod’s .jar file—and any required dependencies—in the server’s mods folder. Then start the server using the loader’s launcher. The exact installation steps depend on the loader; the walkthrough below covers Fabric, not Forge or other loaders.
Before you add anything, check the mod and server match
Mod files are not interchangeable across Minecraft editions or loaders. Before downloading a mod, confirm that it targets Java Edition, the server’s exact Minecraft version, and the loader installed on that server. A mod built for another game version or loader may fail to load. See Fabric’s mod installation guidance for its compatibility requirements.

- Edition: These steps are for Java Edition, not Bedrock Edition.
- Minecraft version: Check the version listed on the mod’s project page against the server’s version.
- Loader: Confirm that the mod is for the loader you use, such as Fabric or Forge. Fabric’s files and installation steps should not be assumed to work with another loader.
- Side and dependencies: Check whether the mod belongs on the server, the client, or both, and whether it requires other mods.
If you have not chosen a loader, compare the mods you want for your target Minecraft version and follow the chosen loader’s current server installation instructions. The steps below are for Fabric; they are not a complete comparison of Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge.
Install Fabric on the server
For an existing server, stop it before changing files. Keep a separate copy of the world and configuration so you have a backup before making changes. Minecraft’s Java Edition server setup guide covers the standard server context; for Fabric’s server installation, follow the Fabric installation instructions.

- Use the Fabric installer’s Server option, select the Minecraft and Fabric loader versions you intend to run, and install to the server directory.
- Check the server directory for
fabric-server-launch.jar. Fabric’s instructions expect aserver.jaralongside the Fabric launcher. - Use the Java runtime appropriate to the Minecraft release and loader. The Fabric Wiki, accessed October 8, 2026, recommends Java 17 for Minecraft 1.17–1.20.4 and Java 21 for Minecraft 1.20.5 and higher. These are version-scoped recommendations, not an evergreen requirement for every future release.
Put the mod files in the server’s mods folder
- Download the mod’s
.jarfrom its project page, after confirming the game version, loader, and side requirements. - Check that mod’s instructions for required dependencies. Many Fabric mods require Fabric API, but not all do; add it only when the mod lists it as a requirement, and choose a compatible version.
- In the server directory, place the mod and its required dependency
.jarfiles in themodsfolder. If the folder is not there, create a folder namedmodsin the server directory. Do not put files only in your local game installation’smodsfolder: that is not the server’s folder.
Fabric’s instructions for installing mods describe placing mod JARs in a mods folder and checking dependencies. For a server, use the folder alongside the server files.
Start the Fabric server and check its output
Start the server with the Fabric launcher rather than launching the vanilla server JAR directly. The Fabric Wiki gives this example:

java -Xmx2G -jar <fabric server launcher jar file name> nogui
Replace the placeholder with the actual launcher filename in your server directory. This is an example command, not a universal memory recommendation; use Java and server settings appropriate to your installation. Watch the startup output for errors before allowing players to join.
Make sure clients have the right setup
Do not assume every mod needs to be installed on both the server and every player’s client. Requirements vary by mod, so follow the project’s instructions. For example, Forge documents that a mod marked as client-side only is skipped when a dedicated server runs; this behavior is specific to Forge’s mod metadata, not a rule to apply to every loader or mod. See Forge’s documentation on mod files.

Troubleshoot common problems
The server stops or reports an error during startup
Check that the mod targets the server’s Minecraft version and loader, then confirm its dependencies and their versions. Also verify that the Java runtime matches the requirements for the Minecraft and loader releases you installed. Fabric specifically warns that game-version and loader mismatches can prevent mods from working.
A mod is ignored on a dedicated server
Check the mod’s project instructions for its side designation. A client-only mod may not run on the server; Forge’s documentation says its dedicated server skips mods identified as client-side only.

- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10

Players cannot join or do not see the expected behavior
Compare the mod’s instructions with the server and client setups. Some mods require client installation as well as server installation, while others do not. Check version and side requirements for each mod rather than telling every player to install every server mod.
You need help with a mod-related failure
Minecraft Help states: “As modding is not officially supported, Minecraft Support cannot assist with issues arising from mod usage.” For a mod-specific problem, consult the mod or loader’s project documentation and support channels. See Minecraft Help’s page on Java Edition mods.
