In a Battlefield 1 War Story, hold the spotting button to raise your binoculars and spot enemies at long range. On the cited PC manual’s default controls, hold Q; on the PS4 UK/ANZ manual, hold E. Tap the same button to spot an enemy in your crosshairs without using the binoculars. Multiplayer works differently: use the normal spotting input or the Scout’s Trench Periscope gadget.

How to spot and track an enemy in a War Story
- Look toward the enemy you want to mark.
- Tap the spotting button—Q on the cited PC manual’s controls or E on the cited PS4 manual’s controls—to spot an enemy in your crosshairs.
- For long-range spotting, hold that button to raise the binoculars, then aim at the enemy.
- To track the enemy on the mini-map while viewing them through the binoculars, press and hold Q on PC or press E on PS4, as specified in the respective manual.
Multiplayer: use spotting or the Trench Periscope
The War Story binocular control is not the multiplayer long-range tool. In multiplayer, press the normal spotting input when an enemy is in sight; on PC, the manual lists Q, and on PS4, it lists E. A spotted enemy’s location is marked on the mini-map for you and your teammates.

Spotting does not make you undetectable. The campaign awareness indicator is white when enemies are neutral, yellow when they are searching, and red when they have spotted you. The manual advises staying low, out of sight, and moving slowly to avoid detection.

If the binoculars do not activate
