You need 135 sugar cane to craft 15 standard bookshelves from scratch in Minecraft. That makes the 135 paper needed for their 45 books, because sugar cane converts to paper one-for-one.
How the sugar cane total is calculated
- Bookshelves to books: Each standard bookshelf uses 3 books, so 15 bookshelves need 45 books.
- Books to paper: Each book uses 3 paper, so 45 books need 135 paper.
- Paper to sugar cane: Crafting 3 sugar cane produces 3 paper, a one-to-one conversion. You therefore need 135 sugar cane for 135 paper. Minecraft’s bookshelf recipe and paper recipe establish these quantities.
Other materials for 15 standard bookshelves
If you are crafting everything from raw materials, you also need 45 leather for the books and 90 wooden planks for the bookshelves. These materials do not change the sugar cane total. The recipe details are in Minecraft’s official bookshelf article.
How existing paper or books change the amount
- Each paper you already have replaces 1 sugar cane you would otherwise gather.
- Each book you already have replaces 3 sugar cane, because it already contains the paper needed for one book.
- Paper can also sometimes be found in shipwrecks, strongholds, and village cartographer chests, according to Minecraft’s paper article.
Scope of this calculation
This total is for the standard bookshelf recipe, not a chiseled bookshelf or a modded recipe. Check the recipe for any different block or mod before using the same count.
